Something in aluminum, perhaps... and I DON'T mean the kind that are anodized purple, if you get my drift...

That stock yellow plastic one gets grungey so easily and seems flimsy...

I think I could fab. one out of aluminum? That'd be an interesting project. ( but then the yellow dipstick would seem out of place )

Actually Thadd, I cleaned up my old yellow one and it looks good. Just use some degreaser or McGuires purple magic crap on it. Came out decent.

Spealking of making aluminum pieces, I was thinking of droping by my old highschool so I could make a billet shift **** and door locks. I remember making all sorts of crap on the CNC, a cannon (non functional of course), a handle for a gavel (sp) etc. The last year I was there I was the foremost authority on our new CNC, a machine capable of scanning and duplicating objects and receiving values from 3d renderings (made a 911 and a Vette out of styrofoam). I'll try and see if my drafting teacher kept my single piston 2 stroke 3d rendering too (reverse engineered on AutoCad from a crank, piston, connecting rod, and piston pin from a briggs&stratton motor). Anyone have ideas for cool stuff? Special requests? I could send stuff out, but you would have to pay postage (no guarantee either, so dont go about asking me to fabricate pistons for you ok?).

Here is an idea for a cool item made from Al. Perhaps you could fab. a new shift pattern to replace the plastic piece on the top of the factory shift ****. Either re-make the shift pattern or perhaps just the Porsche crest. It'd be sweet, but the piece is pretty complex as the surface has a bit of curvature to it.

Cheers,

I made a shift pattern cap out of a Corian countertop sample. You can grab one at a Home Depot or Lowe's. They're about 2X2 inches. You need to be handy with tools to do it. I used a stationary disc sander to get it to the right diameter and thickness. Then used a sanding block to give it the right curvature. When it fits, polish it with a Scotch-brite pad and glue it in. It looks great. I have a burgundy interior and used a color called "Ruby" Ihad to come up with something because my original one cracked when I put a new shifter boot on.

I can do an Al Porsche crest for the shifter NO PROBLEM. The curvature could be a bit of a bitch, but theres always the flat alternative. I'll make a bunch of prototype 944 interior pieces and post pics. Should be done in a month or so.

Matt, let me know what kinds of parts you can fabricate when you've got prototypes, I may be interested in buying some from you. Ideas: Door handles/lock *****, Oil filler cap, other ***** for the dash, etc.

Try www.design911.co.uk

They have the alloy shift pattern insert, along with other alloy interior stuff.

Yeah, they sure do have it, but do you wanna pay those prices or just pay for raw materials and shipping?
Thad: I think I'll make a filler cap. Dash ***** are easy BUT, they are mostly illuminated so you would be losing functionality. I have already thought of door handles. Good idea, we'll see how the prototypes come out. As far as lock ***** and the oil filler cap: easy stuff, you could get it anodized black or something. Anyhow, expect to see some pics in about a month. Cheers!
