Though an archive of FAQ. is a good idea. it is the new guy's. A good thing most times do not know of an archive. and this is a place to ask questions. and reasking Q's is a good thing. some one new might have something new to offer. We want new blood often. that is what keeps this site open.

Here's my $.02:

As a new user, I do my best to reference the 944FAQ and search the archives. Sometimes you find what you are looking for, and other times you don't. Sometimes you find what you want but are still unsure or have further questions. So, I think that repeat posts are inevitable. (I, personally, don't mind them too much - since they are easy enough to skip over, and often deviate from the original topic and proceed into uncharted comical territories.) IMO then, the ones that are clearly unresearched are the problem posts. And, because of the good nature of most regular posters these posts are responded to, and kept alive towards the top of the list. Perhaps one solution could be to develop more of a scheme where simple response of "Please reference the archives/944FAQ, first..." would signal that more regular posters refrain from following up (as tempting as that might be ) - allowing the thread to sink a bit?

What about "I'm going to buy a 944” that’s why I thought that car histories would be nice, I wouldn't have any clue about making a website but would love to see pics of owners and their cars. You could have owner and car bios.

I love reading about ribs progress, but I'm a Rennlist junky and would like to see others projects as well.

Here's my nickle...
As a relative newcomer, I don't know what has and hasn't been asked before. The archives are great - if you know they're there. But remember, alot of these post are from newcomers who don't know their way around the sight. I tried to "watch" and "listen" until I felt comfortable adding my comments, but my car is a garage queen and it's not important that I have answers today. Some of you may not have the luxury of a second car to drive (or a SUV for picking up parts).
Try this for me if you don't agree. What is the proper spacer size to add on the front and rear wheels of a stock '86 951 so that you can run late model wheels? If you tell me it's been asked before, I'll agree. Problem is - the questions never been fully answered. Don't agree? Then search the archives and prove me wrong - and do it in less than 30 minutes. I know - I tried. First off, what do you search for? If you put wheels in the search engine you get a wide range of posts - some of which have nothing to do with the answer your looking for. Point is, you have to drill down to find the answers, and while that's ok for someone with good computer skills and a touch of Sherlock Holmes in them, it doesn't describe us all.
My suggestion, and perhaps this is what Matt is refering to. Have a seperate site that address these questions. But keep Rennlist as it is, after all the banner at the top left says these are All Discussion Forums - and that's exactly what were doing.

generically: 1" (or 30mm if you can find them that way)

The question doesn't have one answer, depends on what "late" wheels you are referring to. The C2 had an option for Cup-style snow/winter wheels that came in a 17x7" with a ~25mm offset... bolts right onto the early cars.

Welp, guess we'd better keep asking questions over-and-over Besides, what would I have to do for fun?

icat.. i think the solution to your particular example is to actually know the well-known sites that we all have read and are familiar with the contents. personally speaking this is what i did before i even started using or even knew about rennlist. while containing a lot of crap, the 944 web ring is a good place to start researching stuff..

rennlist is good for real time info.

Hey Matt, I see where you are coming from, but I do have to say that searching the archive doesn't bear the results you want sometime, which is why you see so many reposts. It doesn't help when there are typos and spelling errors. Or when you call it a spanner and I call it a wrench or that kind of thing.

I also have to point out that sometimes things get bumped back up to the top, like the post I made MONTHS ago about MAFs on an NA. What the hell is that doing back up close to the top of the list again.

And oddly enough I get what maybe Instigator was getting at I think, since this board can be a really good place to bitch at times. In fact once this stupid dark gloomy winter is over and I am done with SAD for the year I may not be such a ***** to everyone. Until next winter.

Ah, but that's where being a member pays off big. The members only archive search is completely different than the UBB search here. You can search for a specific topic and add other key words to narrow the search. One would be hard pressed to *not* find the answer to any P-car topic that you're looking for. The "hits" are listed over several pages with several posts listed on each page. Besides...you get many benefits from membership. Just my 2¢

Thanks Skip. But your answer kind of proves my point. The answer that so many newcommers are looking for is buried in a post about not posting oft answered questions.

While we're having a bitch 'n' moan, my biggest gripe is all the folks who come here for help, but then never close the loop by reporting back & telling us what worked... or saying thank you. (Then there are the a**holes like me who contribute to thread drift on someone else's topic...)

But to add one to the list for FAQ's, one that's only needed for the onset of cold weather.."Why's my power steering suddenly noisy in the morning?" Maybe next fall, we can run a pool on the date that this'll first show up.
