Post KYB Shocks?

Is this a good shock? Sorry for the vague question... Anyone ever heard/used them before?

Thanks,
Matt

The name rings a bell. I am not sure, but I think they made really good shocks for VW's.

Thanks for the Koni info.

Paragon has those for $97. These KYB are only $34, and I have a $20 gift cert. from ExpressAutoParts someone gave me, which is why I was asking about them. Need to find something to buy there, and my shocks have never been changed...

I have neither had, or taken a ride in a car with KYB's, so I couldn't honestly tell you. I do know that you can't go wrong with Koni's or Bilstein though

I rode in a car fitted with KYB's and it made an aweful noise when the shocks compressed. Sounded to a degree like a creak in a mattress.

I put KYB's in my tercel. (The sportiest shocks I could find for that car...)

The ride was signifigantly stiffer, but compared to the porsche, they are very VERY mushy. Then again.. it IS a tercel.

Matt,

Just so happens that I had these shocks installed
this past Thursday. For starters, they didn't
cost an arm and a leg (about 80 some dollars for the pair). Surprise , something that didn't cost an arm and leg for my "Por-sha"!

Initial driving impression is very favorable, fairly firm but with enough yield not to bounce around like a slammed 'ricer'. Lot less rear end 'squat' under acceleration.

THese units replaced the original shox on my '87 951 (72K miles) so obviously anything was going to be an improvement. Time and the first DE next spring will tell more for long time wear.

Matt,

My friend has to Nissan 240SX and he has KYBs on it. He likes them alot and they are a good deal stiffer than stock, but not as stiff as my konis. I think they are a quality piece and if you have the means, get them. But I still haven't found better handling cars <short of coil-overs> than the one's equipped with konis. Just my opinion, so take it for what it's worth. If you have any specific questions you want me to ask him just let me know. Good Luck

KYB's are not bad shocks! Yes they may not be that stiff, but they are made as oe replacements not sport shocks!

If i wanted just to freshin the rear shocks in my car I would just buy the kyb's......... If i was looking to get better handling out of my car i would than look into a sport shock of some sort.

it sounds like you are not looking to spend alot of money so i wont even pitch what i would buy if i wanted to stiffen up the car........
I have had KYB's on my honda and my vw's and had good luck with all of them.........

I put them on my car last yr,so far Im pleased they are much better than the original stock ones with 89 k on them. They feel fairly stiff, not as much as koni ,I have had no noises or problem. They handle quite well ,they have been tested on some good twisties and ID wold reccommend them.Dont try to winn an autocross with them. But as a daily driver they are fine!

What ticks me off is that KYB doesn't offer their performance AGX adjustables for the 944, only the rather mundane gas-adjust. That sucks. Same for Tokkiko. Now if we were driving mustangs or hondas we could get good adjustable shocks for a reasonable price.

Actually the koni yellows aren't THAT expensive, I should quit my whining ;-)

I had them on the rear of my 951, I installed them in May 2001. By April 2002 they were shot-- 4500 (gentle) miles later. The one on the driver's side made a clunk when compressed.

I posted about it at the time, somebody posted a follow up with the same story.

It wasn't a bad performing shock, but my experience makes me question their longevity. 60 bucks down the toilet after a year.

I have the Koni's now, and I like them a lot.
