Post Brake upgrade

I would like to upgrade the front brakes of 1987 924S with the 1987 944 Turbo calipers and rotors.

What parts are needed to make this happen ?

Anyone ? Posted on the 924S site but no responses.

I would appreciate any help.

Thank you.

You need the entire strut, spindle, control arm, tie-rod, and all the brake goodies. [EDIT]The 924S uses the older arms and late offset. You'll need the right wheels too (16x7, 53mm).

Good Luck!

Skip forgot to mention that when you are done you will not have a speedometer. Why?

Because the 924S runs the speedometer cable off of the left front spindle.

You would have to convert to the later electronic style, and I do not know what is entailed in this.

Skip,

I am pretty close to 100% sure the '87 924S uses the late offset wheel. I know as a fact that my '88 does.

I am also not too sure that you have to have the control arm, but you are right about needing everything else. And as I posted regarding this same question over on the 924,924S,931 forum, there really is not much to gain for the $$$ and time since the stock brakes are already pretty good and the 924S isn't really all that powerful.

Thank you all very much for the information.

Sounds like it is not really worth doing.

My OTC partner Jay, has done this brake-upgrade (951 brakes on 924). You just have to drill a hole in the spindle for the speedo cable that's all.

Yup, but I was making reference to the diameter (16" vs 15") to clear the new brakes. Offset stays the same though.

The reason the 924S uses the late wheel offset and the early arms is to get the wheel inside the narrower fenders. While you can move the wheels out a bit on the front to accomodate the late arms (ABS offset = +30mm), it's real close... so you have to be sure there's no rubbing on dives and cornering. One of the 924S cars I've seen do this mod had the 6" Boxster front wheels on it to provide good looks *and* clearance.

Skip brings up an interesting point. According to some people on 924.org, late offset suspension will not fit on a 924/924S. The wheels will rub on the fenders. You can probably "roll" them.

So if I remember correctly, up to 85.5 used steel arms and all up to 86 used the shorter A-arms, whether aluminum or steel. In fact, if for some reason while in a crack induced stupor you decided you needed aluminum A-arms on your 924S you could do it. You would just need to make sure you used the A-arms from the one and a half years (85.5-86) they made short ones. And the rear pivot/eccentric as well.

So how dimensionally are the later steering knuckle different other than the tabs to which the calipers mount and the thickness of the tab to which the strut housing mounts (and the hollow left spindle and models with mechanical speedos)?

It seems to me, and if I remember from researching this, that you should use the late steering knuckles with the early (shorter) A-arms so that the wheels will tuck in under the fenders properly.

By the way, you made a typo in the comment you made about the 924S wheels:

Don't want to corn-fuse anyone.

I am building a brake kit for n/a guys that will work on the early cars as well as the 924S without finding a solution for the old speedo problem. However sixteen inch wheels will be a necessity. If you are intrested e-mail me at wui944@aol.com or give me a call for more details.

Hi, a friend is selling the front brake setup from his 93 968:

55K, very clean, new hawk hps pads and original rotors still in good shape, no warpage. Calipers are mint; black w/ white porsche script. Would be a nice upgrade for NAs. Contact him at:
