Default Misting the AC Condenser?

Anyone tried it?

Driving around today in ~90* Riverside heat (this is nothing compared to the upcoming summer) my AC was struggling to keep things cool within the car. As expected it would improve a good bit while in motion compared to when idling but still could be colder. I figure a mister setup like Subaru WRX's use on the intercooler might do some good, and I could use the stock windshield washer tank or similar for water.

I would expect it would help. Maybe try a test with garden hose fine spray and see if you can measure any temp change.

One word-Freeze-12. You can mess with all the 'this might work' schemes you want but unless you are using DuPont R-12 from Mexico or Freeze-12 the 134 conversions suck on a 944. I'm waiting for the folks that say they can freeze a chicken in 30 seconds with 134 but they are rare. The OE 944 condenser is just too small for 134 to work effectively in traffic IMO. Get your R-12 system pressure tight, filled, and it works like new. What do I know living in the 3rd Ring of Hell here in Sacramento about AC?

I have experienced a Sacramento Summer.... hot.

I'll look into the Freeze 12. I filled my R134a last July and its done decently well but I would like it cooler...I am also looking into some decent window tint...

Is the Freeze 12 product something you can do your self? of does it require special tools/skills to recharge your ac system. My 89 S2 is getting a little weak, would be nice to charge the system before it get's to hot. I suspect it's never been done. I noticed on Freeze 12 website they offer a quick charge kit, would that be all I need?

I'm not sure about any special tools but it's good to have an R-12 manifold set or one of the Harbor Freight versions with dual scales. I would still evacuate the system first if you have that luxury. Hoses get old and o-rings dry out so go with barrier type hoses if you are dead serious about AC. I like to think I'm not jaded but I've never seen an effective 134a conversion in my locale; I'm sure they exist but I haven't seen one yet. YMMV

I've had good luck with freeze 12...... until my compressor bearing went out, and took the front seal with it

I came across some r-12 to refill the system with though Its on my short list of things to do (especially since its FINALLY getting over 100 here now)

I will take 100 in Vegas over 90s in Virginia (70% humidity) and day of the week...

Get that AC working!

my 134a conversion worked very well- but im also not in the hottest part of the US. Freeze 12 should be better for sure. If all else fails get a pusher fan and mount it on the front of the condensor.

101 in Dallas. My 134a conversion struggles if I let the car sit in the sun. I am a shade ***** in the summer.

So I was out again today and it was quite hot so I turned on the AC and it was cooling wonderfully. However I got stopped for a few minutes as a train passed (common occurrence here in the land of warehouses) and after that my coolant temp went up to the right hash mark (not super hot but warmer than usual) and my oil pressure dropped at idle to about 2-2.5bar instead of 3-3.5.

I am going to put an external oil cooler on the car to help but decided to do a quick experiment regarding this misting idea. I parked the car and let it idle for a few minutes (AC off) and the temperature didn't really drop at all. I got a bottle of water out of the car, poured it in my mouth, got to the ground and then sprayed/spit it on the radiator/condensor, then ran up to the gauge to see any difference. It dropped a full hash mark in maybe 3 seconds. I think the mister idea may work, I will look into nozzles etc that I can use with the stock windshield washer system (that I have removed anyways but could put back) and will inform you all of my results.

hahaha, I love this idea. I kinda want to do it now too.

And while I'm at it, maybe I can run a line to the back of the car.... and make a spray gun to shoot at people who tailgate me!

What happened to that alt/ac bracket?

BTW, Freeze 12 is 80% R-134 and 20% R-142 (scroll down to table here http://www.epa.gov/ozone/snap/refrig.../macssubs.html). I've used it top off a few R-12 systems with no ill effects but I question it being any better than R-134 as far as AC performance. Is it worth the extra $$? Also, if you need to subsequently take the car to (most) AC shops, they may refuse to even touch your car with a mixed refrigerant. YMMV...
