Turbo vs NA Poll
#46
I know it's not quite on topic, but:
I've always found it's much more entertaining to drive a slow car fast, than to drive a fast car slow.
It's one of the reasons I'm back in the hunt for an old N/A 944.
If you aren't on the track, it's tough to drive a fast car anywhere near it's limits. The most fun I've had on the street was with my 83 944 and my 90 Miata, both were dog slow, but you could really wring their neck and stay (reasonably) close to avoiding license revocation speeds. Just going through the twisties, revving through all the gears, and enjoying the visceral experience.
Just my .02.

haha, now obviously i can't really comment on this dilemma because i've never driven a turbo, but i did get to go for a ride with doug in his 951 and it was SCARY!!! When that turbo hits it was extremely exhilarating, but i have a feeling i could beat him in a straight line race, at least for a bit before i lost time trying to shift that n/a trans through the gears.
For me, i LOVE the instant torque from an n/a car, the sheer speed of a turbo is impressive, but when i can punch you back in your seat from a stop up to 80, i think i win....that is all.

I actually feel sympathy for guys with fast cars (particularly at track events) because they are invariably tagged with the label of buying their speed. Scientifically, if a slow car goes fast, it's the driver. But often there's no way for the fast car driver to really show that it's him, not the car, unless he can spank an equally fast car.

No, I would pick a 968trs over a 968 for sure. But I would prefer to drive 236hp of NA over 236hp of turbo.
Everyone is comparing apples to oranges. It's not a question of 944 vs 951. Like lart said, it's the feeling of the car. Just imagine in some la-la land that there are two cars which are completely equal in every performance spec, and one is turbo, one is NA. Which one would you pick. I say NA, because, like lart said, you can control the balance of the car at any time with the throttle.

YIP, all thirteen hundred and seventy five of them.
ok, somebody quote me the real number of S2s daily or weekend drivin'...
driving my 968 for 3 years and 45 thousand miles, i ain't seen but maybe 1 S2 and 0.000 S3s driving on an actual road.
streckkkkkkkk the S2s and 968s are goin' extinct.
(running 6-speed manuals) there's like eight 968 coupes and maybe twenty cabriolets for sale in the whole flappin' country...

A lot of good post's so far on this, I was a little afraid of this turning into a pissing match but everyone has had great comments. Dman has a great point, I love driving both my 83 944 and 968. Both NA's and a big power difference, but I enjoy both.

The only reason I bought a Turbo over a N/A is because I drove a buddy's N/A first and couldn't handle the lack of power. It was a very well set up N/A car too. Fun and tossable but good Lord nobody home in the power department. I looked into finding an S or S2 but most of the posts I read here convinced me otherwise (mostly because I was led to believe it's harder to get parts for the S/S2 vs. a Turbo.)
I've had fast turbo and N/A cars in the past (13s Dodge Omni GLH Turbo, 11s Eagle Talon TSi, 11s Corvette Z06) and definitely prefer N/A power delivery. The "rush" from the boost coming up is nice but I prefer the smooth predictability of the N/A.

Am I the only one in awe of how many folks are posting about being "surprised" when boost comes on?
OR
Am I the only one, who has driven their turbo enough to be able to not only predict it, but also manage it?
Of course, my use has been strictly street simulations... but there have been a few fun ones.. (ask Doug, steves996c4s... and a few others on here...)

obviously they're very good cars and some of the best handling on earth... the 968s were virtually tied on the skidpad with the Ferrari F-50 in tesing 1993, as the two best handling production cars... and many if not most of you are running better tires, and better suspension than the 944 cars had back in the '80s.....
but then there's the Turbos and they were if anything, de-tuned from the factory...
what you mean to say is there's no good thread out there that never turned into a "dick-measurin'-contest..."
wtf, without a little spice you puke on the nice.

I love my NA, but it is kinda pokey
I have driven a 951, and other turbo cars. I think a turbo is alot of fun, and I'd love to have a 951 one day, but my dream 944 is either an s2, or my NA with a 968 engine in it. I like flat power delivery I guess.

you're all ordered to watch this clip...(greatest youtube ever).
it has the answer to this thread... forward to (1:30 of the clip)...
THE BEST P-CAR HAS 10 CYLINDERS.
4 cylinders is like 0.4000 of that, with a turbo, GOOD, 8 cylinders = "now you're talkin !"

I've found that there are always faster cars than a 944 turbo at the track. I love passing GT3s... But would need a bit more than 250 HP to pass GT3 cups.

Same performance #'s?
Stock for stock?
I think I would take the turbo, simply for the potential for more 'easy' power.
For a DD I think a NA would be better, I DD'd my 951 and it got old after a while.
In fact I actually prefer driving my Dodge van in traffic over my 951.
Oh and Ethan's car is scary fast and JoKa is crazy.
