Default something perfect...i think

so yesterday my sister had her first daughter and i decided i'd go visit from Pa to Ct...i didn't make it. car died, i had no idea why, it seemed like the head(replaced last nov.) had no compression...fun, or so i thought. i got a tow and the car got home to my driveway, my plan was to go through and rebuild the car.

i went inside first and got a drink. and i heard the car crank over...ok, scary, keys are in my pocket. sure enough it started, and boy did it ever. it started and lit itself on fire!!!!!!!!!! that's right my car set itself ablaze. i ran and got the hose and starting pouring the water on knowing there was no saving the electrical. what made the whole process worse, until i could get the battery disconnected it would crank itself every 30 seconds...adding more fuel to the fire.

i'm in between rebuilding it maybe a turbo or a 3.0 turbo...could b fun or just junking it...or part out

First, congrats on being an uncle, or are you an aunt?

Sorry to hear about the car, but seriously, that has got to be the most interesting story of a car killing itself.

By chance do/did you have an aftermarket alarm with a remote starter installed?

Damn, that's one for the record books. Never heard of a Porsche with the 'Christine' syndrome. Sounds like something shorted in your ignition switch. Was the paint damaged badly?

Can't recall if I have seen your car in person but from your avatar it looks to be in nice shape.

Don't scrap it. If the electrical was not too badly fried, rebuild it. You can pick up a nice 3.0l motor for between $2k and $3k...add to that the harness and DME and it won't cost all that much to install.

You'll have a sweet lookin sleeper !

the more we invest in our cars, the more we need fire extinguishers.

but now you can build a supercar. congrats.

most pressing thing imo is why it started on its own

j berk, you have seen my car on a run we did a couple years ago when i first joined. and it's not as nice it was in a hit and run a couple weeks ago and i haven't replaced the RF fender yet

the paint isn't that bad, just the hood.

all the harness for the engine got toasted. the block actually looks ok, but i'd still replace it. do a wide body front end, fiberglass to shave some weight, and a 968 rear spoiler, and euro rear bumper.

if anyone knows, how could i do a 3.0 turbo? like a 968 turbo.

i am an uncle now, but i refuse to be called uncle, i'm only 23, it makes me feel older

and no there was no alarm on the car. i have since last post narrowed it down to the Cat being clogged and not allowing gasses to leave the engine, it backed up, and finally put a hole the through exhaust, the fuel vaporized and the heat of the engine set it ablaze. the starter wire probably was the first to get hit, and somehow short itself to power...thus the self cranking...that's my theory

Dang, that's got to be one of the craziest car stories I've ever heard. Sounds like a good theory, but man, that's insane. Sorry about the car though, but from what it sounds like you were fortunate. Still won't be cheap but the damage could have definitely been worse, oh well just gives you an excuse to install some nice upgrades. Again sorry about the car but glad you're alright, good luck with the rebuild.

I had a loose connection to a starter on a van cause it to keep on cranking even after I took out the key. I had to run into the house and grab a wrench to disconnect the battery to stop it. It cranked by itself for at least 5 minutes. I imagine the starter wiring on your 944 was the first thing to be melted in the fire causing the engine to crank much like your theory said.
