Rear Speakers Install (pics) w/o window removal
I installed my rear speakers today...noticed nobody has posted a photo log. Contrary to Clark's Garage...you only have to remove two screws. The two closest to the seat at the bottom. You also only have to remove the the bottom portion of the rear panel from the window.
Anyway...here's some pics.
tools...a coat hanger and small flat tip screwdriver
pulling the panel from under the window seal...
You only have to pull out to just above where the window curves up...
You can pull the panel about 8 inches away from the speaker. There is a plastic clip that pops out...
Mines a 85.5 so it has just the 4x6 cut out...
The old ones are pretty trashed...putting in an Infinity Kappa plate speaker.
Installing it with a right angle screwdriver...
Sounds 100% better....
Also many dont know this but Porsche made speaker spacers/grills for the front. I found some on ebay...they allow for a lot of options for speakers.
Installed...
Cheers....

Interesting speaker covers for the front. I don't have those speakers with the 10 speaker option, but I bet a lot of people here would be interested in them. Do you have a part number for them?

Part # on the spacer is 944.555.159.00....so they are Porsche. The grills have a # that starts with 944 also.

Exactly what I have in my 89 NA, as I indicated in post #6 in your prior thread: https://rennlist.com/forums/924-931-...r-spacers.html. No rubbing, they are awesome and protect well. If I ever got another 44 I would make sure to have these.

From my 944 Stereo FAQ (at http://reality.sgiweb.org/wws/stereo_faq.html):
... A second, and nicer-looking, style of 4x6 mounting was used in some later ('88+) cars. This is a two-piece assembly consisting of a thick plastic frame and a snap-on grille. The grille area is made of metal with a plastic surround. The frame acts as a spacer, making it possible to mount speakers as deep as about 2 inches. For example, an Audax VE4X6F0 mid/woofer, which is 52 mm deep, barely fits. It actually presses against the window track.
The parts list for the later grille assembly is:
* 944-555-149-00-01C Grille (2 needed)
* 944-555-159-00 Frame (2 needed)
* 477-035-375 Bushing (8 needed)
* 043-938-3 3.9x22 lens-head sheet metal screw (8 needed)
* 011-522-7 Washer (8 needed)
Note that the bushings are important to space the frame out far enough from the door panel to allow the grilles to snap on. Also note that the replacement speakers MUST be the European oval shape,- not rectangular. The replacement speakers must also have a thin steel mounting frame like the OEM speaker - not a thick plastic one.

I was thinking, since front speakers are such a PITA
take them out, make some kind of a new "door panel" (RS style perhaps)
and use rear speakers only
look good!

just a note regarding not removing the rear windows...
I've changed the rear speakers on both a 924 and a 944 - the 924 was fine without removing the rear windows, however I found that with the 944 (85.1), the vinyl of the rear panels was wrapped right around the seam under the window seal and appeared to be stuck to the metal.
Knowing that I'd done it before without removing the window, I gave it a pull, then a harder tug - and the vinyl ripped!
So - I'd say *be careful*.. I think it's a bit of a mixed bag and that sometimes the vinyl is stuck so hard (either through age or different glue?) that you just have to remove the window in order to un-peel the vinyl from the car.
- Great write-up though! I'll definitely be looking out for some of those spacers.
Chris.

I changed my rear speakers to 6.5" and did not remove the rear glass, went very smooth, no issues .My 87 944 had the cut out for the larger speakers but I would cut the steel if I had to to install larger speakers then the 4X6 . Good speakers are not that shape, look at high end home stereo speakers I have not seen any that are oval . Good luck let use know how you make out and how it sounds.

I also decided on running rear speakers only. It turns out the sound is really poor. The right speaker is blocked by the passenger seat, and the left speaker is only sorta audible. I'm going to just put speakers back in the front doors. It's good to learn about the front speaker spacers - thanks blackop.

looks like the shallowest speaker I could find are these Alpines: http://www.woofersetc.com/p6261/SPS4...ar-speaker.htm
maybe they will work in the front?

Just wanted to remark, this tip was fantastic.
I was able to bend the panels enough that I left the lower window seal perfectly in place.
New speakers sound great.
