Default Thoughts on Tires for 89' S2

I'm looking for a high performance, rain or shine street tire for my 944S2. The two that have caught my interest are Kuhmo Ecsta SPT and Continental ExtremeContact DWS tires. I'm looking to run 205/55-16 in the front and 225/50-16's in the rear as per factory specifications.

The Continental's seem to have an all around better user rating on tirerack. On rennlist however, it seems that a lot of people seem to like the Kuhmo's. Any thoughts on which might be the best buy?

Also, has anyone had experience in dealing with Tirerack's 'Road Hazard Program'?

Take a look at the Dunlop Direzza Sport Z1 Star Spec. Tire Rack sells these as well. Have these on both of my 944's. Have tracked them as well and for a street tire did well. Couple 968 folks were running these both for street and track as well. Price seems to be a bargain as well. From what I've read, the Kumho's might not be as good in the rain, but I have no actual experience with this.

I put Yokohama Avids on my '89 S2...mainly to match the front tires which were virtually new Yokos; the Avids have been fine but I don't intend to track the car. I heard the other night the the Dunlops are on clearance, hence the price.

what you are looking at is a summer tire and an all season tire. all seasons tires suck at all seasons. and summer tires can work in spring and fall. so im unsure of what your usage is.

if you are looking for all season tires, falken ZE912's are awesome all season tires. i have them on my 944 and my moms van. very good all season tire.

but if you want summer tires, the Dunlop Direzza star specs are the way to go. they recently won "car and driver" comparo test 2 or 3 issues ago. the Yokohoma advan ad08 are good tires too.

its just a matter of what tire you want, a summer or all season tire.

I was bored and looking at tires last night, my question is if it's viable to use Summer tires in Texas, where most of the year it's 'summer' but there are times where there's a ton of rain, and one or two days of slush/ice. I'f I'm only buying one set of tires should I get summers and not drive in weather, or are high performance summer tires good enough to deal with some heavy rain?

Ehh so pretty much I'm asking how good performance summer tires are in rain, heavy and light, as I've always just had all seasons...

sorry to derail with a noob question, I'll probably just go with whatever tires the consensus is here. That and I want to see my new Rennlist Membership on my posts (Whoo hoo!)

I just put the Khumo's on my car and took off the yoko's....So far I like the Khumo's...but it has only been a few days. The Yoko's were on my car for 3 years and 6 DE's...yes...I DE'd with all-season tires!

They actually are in storage...I could not bring myself to chuck em because they are not down to the wear bars yet....

So far I am leaning toward liking the Khumo's better but I think it is too early to form a full opinion.

I'd say summers only in texas. I run Falken 452 tires, been happy with them.

I have the Kuhmos and love them. For me they transformed the car. I had know idea the you could get such a quiet and comfortable ride out of a performance tire.

Sorry to jump in but am also looking for new tires for an S2 cab and thought about going up a size to 225/50/16 front and 245/45/16 rears. Only tire Tire rack has in that size in the Fusion ZR1. anybody running these tires? I assume the will fit as this is what I ran on my 86 951. Any comments on how they perform. Not a daily driver and no DE for now as I do not yet have a roll bar.

I may go with the Dunlop Star Spec's. Sounds like an outstanding value. I'm looking to run more of a summer tire, I'd say. But something that can handle an occasional torrential downfall.

Is it common knowledge that one should pay extra to be include in the 'Road Hazard Program'? Like many, I've had issues with picking up nails before, but from past experience would anyone recommend this program?

No offense to tire rack, they are an awesome sponsor and vendor. But if you really REALLY want other sizes, as you have stated tom, there are other tire suppliers that are good too. Tire rack doesn't carry any falken tires but I got them from discount tire. They may have other sizes that tire rack doesn't.

And as for the road hazard program, I passed. Imo, its rare for me to have a flat. If so, and this is my only car, I don't wanna wait a few days for another tire. Just go to a local shop that patches tires and get it patched. I got my tire patched for 10 bucks, took about 35 minutes. I was back on the road. End of story.

But I would like to know how the road hazard program works. For those who have used them, please do chime in.
