i may have access to a machine shop, i think i might try to shave off some of the inside of the bumper metal (make it thinner) and see how much weight i can take off..gotta be at least 1/4" thick, even shaving 1/16" all around would probably be like 4lbs lol

You never really know how effective it is until you need it
For years I considered a fiberglass rear bumper for my street/de driven 911. Then, on the street at a light, I get tapped by a buick. A small tear on the bumperette and a slight compression of the shock. No "real" damage. Had it been fiberglass, it would have been a lot worse (sport muffler would have been hit, possible engine/trans damage.. who knows.. because there would have been no real support.

go euro bumpers - you know you want to!
In all seriousness though, I realize that there is a tradeoff in ditching the bumper shocks. Frankly though, for me, the aesthetic benefits and weight savings outweigh the possible cost savings that the bumper shocks would afford should I damage the car in a low speed collision. I'm much more worried about my own safety in a collision, and I don't think that bumper shocks (or lack thereof) will really affect whether or not I walk away should the worst happen (knock on wood). So, I made my choice on whether or not the bumper shocks are useful...see my profile picture

I t-boned someone making a left on a turn at about 15 mph, crushed the other cars rear rocker panel, but bent my frame mounts in the process. Bumper was pushed in significantly on one side, but alignment and the frame stayed straight
