Post HELP, MY CAR SOUNDS LIKE RICE!!!!

OKay guys, here is one for masters:
I just took out my cat and installed a straight pipe in it's place. I dont understand why but when I went for a drive, as soon as I hit 2500 rps; I heard that sound, the high pitch vibrating sound. The type of sound you hear comming from a civic at full muffler dialation. Anyway to get rid of it?

Thanks
Christian

No, I don't have an answer for you. Merely commiserating. The same thing happened to me last week.

Could be the heat sheild. I had a similar problem when I put after market exhaust on my car. I tweaked the sheild a few times and now it seems better. If it happens again ..off with the sheild for good. Just no parking in tall dry grass. Like i'll park my porsche in a wheat feild or something?
I hope this helps.

Well in my case I do hear seperate resonances. One of them I think is the heatshield, but I do believe the straight pipe cause the 'riciness'. I guess changing the muffler (Bursch right now) might help, but that'lll wait until it dies.

Actually, just remove your muffler completely. Then you won't sound like rice at all!

i think removing the cat from inline 4's or slanted 4's will make that sound....i have the same problem too...

how im going ot fix it, im getting a high flow 3 inch cat....that should keep the noise down some plus i'll still be legal

the muffler is another issue....im debating on what to get...any ideas?

When I had my cat cut out the guy there recomended a Cherry Bonb( I remember them from my younger days ) he had removed the cat off of several 944's and said they will resonate if you dont put something back in the place where the cat was. My muffler sound is slightly louder now but still very acceptable! He only charged $40.00 to cut out the old cat, weld in a cherry bomb, and reattach the back hanger that had come off. Solved my problems.

i don't think a test pipe on a 944 would sound ricey let alone a straight thru exhaust. When i went to the local street races and kids were just revving their farting motors , i revved mine and everyone just popped their head up like "what the hell was that it sounds sweet!" Of course this was the Dynomax UltraFlo on

While the euro's did not have a cat, they have a resonator in it's place. The cherry bomb (glasspack) in place of the cat gives a very nice deep sound without a large increase in volume.

food for thought:

If a civic all tricked out "civic style" is called rice ... what would a tricked out Porsche be called... bratwurst?

I can hear it now from the rice crew...."Yo dog, look at that bratwursted out Posh-a over there. Bling Bling.I gots to gets me one of those."

OK, that was off topic.. sorry.

From what I understand, the pipes get very hot when the car is running. If you removed the cat and replaced it with a test pipe, the test pipe will not have warped under heat as the other pipes have over time. To solve the noise, which is most likely due to a leak either at the headers OR at the joint where the t-pipe meets the rear exhaust section. You need to first of all replace the original bolts/nuts since they can/do break when retensioning.
After putting the new bolts on, go warm up the car (IE: drive it a few miles). Then re-tension the bolts while the pipe is still warm. Be careful not to burn yourself...very hot under there...and Good Luck! Doing this solved the noise my car made after putting on a T-Pipe.

Well guys, I decided on installing a Cherry bomb in pace of where the CAT was. Boy I tell ya, I Could really feel a difference!!!! This little N/A that could really needed that back pressure. It sounds great with thew Bursch muffler.

I recommend this exhuast setup to any N/A owner.

Christian

P.S. A friend of mine (who helped the installation)and I went for a little test ride. Well we ended up at a stop light with a brand new turbo, and I mean brand new. (NO THIS IS NO AMAF STORY)The driver is a younger guy with a girl (20's) He looks at my car, points to it and him him and his girl laugh. So he revs his engine. I reply with reving my engine, and you would believe how fast his laught became a frown. !!!! And no, we didnt race!!! He would have kicked the crap out of me. But what he doesnt know, wont hurt him
