Post power steering rack rebuild?

A while back a thread was starting about rebuilding a power steering rack with a kit from "Transtech". Has anyone successfully completed this project? I'm considering it, so I would appreciate any experience you have on the subject.

Thanks,

Don Pruitt

Just completed one, my fourth or fifth one, so what's the question...?
The kit from transtech, is less than $30 and includes all of the seals and o'rings except one, for the teflon coated gear shafts guide, not really a problem, since you can use a sealer on the cover, just in case this one leaks, or find an o'ring for it at a local parts supplier.
post here again, if your interested in the prt.# from Transtech, I have it at my shop...
get new boots from the dealer.
i have the # for them also..
Make sure to drain and flush the lines if you had a pump failure, to eliminate any metal shavings.
The job is fairly easy, except for the seal in the extension tube, it's a pain to remove.

Wow! This is exactly what I need. If anyone has the part # and the website or phone number for Transtech, please post it. I've got a pretty decent leak and I would love to NOT spend $300.00!!

I'll post the part# for the transtec kit tomorrow sorry guys for leaving you in the dark, there are some important tips to the procedure, if you really going to rebuild the rack as opposed to changing only "some" of the seals.

I'll supply a step by step, for the interested, and my email for those willing to tackle the job....

I have my rack out now, and I can't tell if it was leaking (I have never added p/s to my car and it has been full since I bought it) or it was just coated with oil from one of my several leaks I have had. Maybe I should go ahead and do the seals on it for peace of mind. $30 vs a big PITA later when I would have to remove it again...I think I will go with door 1.

Thumbs up

I would like to order a kit if you have put one together. Even better would be the instructions w/ pics you mentioned earlier. Send us your email and we'll get it going.

Hey,
The kit from Transtec arrived today. I'm planning on dropped the rack this weekend. I searched on Transtec and found that they have an online catalog. I think there is only one 944 kit(86^). I had to get the kit through a distributer but the people at transtec were very helpful. If a rennlister were to put together a kit I would purchase it. I soon will have to rebuild the 951 as well. Any tips or got'chas on this would be very much appreciated.

thanks

Hey guys, I sent an e-mail to Skip, at Paragon offering my assistance in doing a picture, step by step, but they are either still considering to offer the kit and instructions, or not interested in carrying the item. I haven't heard yet, so I'm not sure which..
<a href="http://www.transtec.com" target="_blank">www.transtec.com</a>
419-499-2502, ask for the power steering rack ext.

The kit # is 8239, they may say, the kit is not specificly for "your" 944 but it is, for 944's 1986-Up, if you say turbo, it will raise an application question with them since they do not
have a "turbo" listing.
The kit will fit all, including turbo.
I won't be offering the kit for sale, with the instructions, at least not soon enough to help you guys currently with racks out of the car, but I will if Paragon passes on idea.
I find it's right up their alley, being a "steering" component..

In the meantime feel free to contact me at 944t@bellsouth.net if you have questions about a foolproof procedure, to avoid yourself having a headache with this service.
use your "list" user name in the subject area, and I'll get back ASAP.

You all, may help the situation by emailing Jason at Paragon and inquiring about a kit, or requesting that they carry such an item.
Send him a link to this nthread, relaying your seriousness in needing a supplier with instructions..

Note: the kit from transtec, is just that, a bag with parts, NO instuctions whatsoever.....
And since PORSCHE sells only rebuilt factory racks, as do aftermarket suppliers, you'll be hardpressed to find even an exploded veiw...

Cheers
