Post Speaker replacement opinions

Who has replaced thier speakers stock 4x6?What do you think about them? Which ones fit easy and sound the best?Im planning on restoring the interior back to original ,but I will be adding a sub,so 4x6 s will only need to handle mids and highs. So what is the opinions of what sounds clean AND fit in stock locations?

Kenwood,alpine,mb quart,etc.......

Paul,

I'm assuming that you are referring to the back speakers near the window and rear seats?

I believe that the 4x6 size is a drop-fit from all the archive data I've been reading. I'm actually interested in going larger than that since I'm not going to be putting a sub-woofer in the car.

I've heard that 6x8's can fit, but mounting brackets need to be fabricated. I looked at the Infinity Reference 5x7 speakers and they sound rather good in the bass department for their size. I just don't know how much work is required to make it fit and still look stock (for the 5x7 size of speakers).

I was at PartsHeaven yesterday and they always have about 10+ 944's lying around in some stripped state or another. I should have looked at the back speaker mounting area and measured it. Damn, I forgot!

Good luck.

I just replaced my rears with Blaupunkt 4X6 graphite cone speakers......they were cheap, a direct fit, and they sound good......especially if you're gonna add a sub anyway. check crutchfield for the best prices

Eclipse is the way to go. Or if you can afford it, Image Dynamics or MBQuart...crystal clear sound with adeqaute volume. Wish I could take my own advice and buy some.

I put in a pair of Kenwood 4x6 coaxials from Best Buy, don't remember what #, but $69 per pair and 2nd pair was 1/2 price. I'm real happy with them.

If you work at it with a helper you can get the rears in without removing the int. panel or the window.

i replaced the fronts in mine last night with jbl gto6425's- i had to trim some plastic from the top of the speakers to get the covers to fit. but they sound much better than the oem speakers. check the stereo faq on this site for more info on speaker replacement.

I found the #.

Kenwood KFC 4675C, dropped right in no trimming, front grills push out very slightly.

I replaced my front speakers with Polk 4"x6"; had to shim out the door panel with some wood paint stir sticks so the factory cover would be flush with the panel. I was going to put 4"x6" in the rear but discovered that on my 1987 951 there was a round plate that was notched to form part of the 4"x6" cutout. It's only held by three #6 metal screws and can be easily removed. The resulting circular hole can handle a 6 1/2" speaker, but you have to make some brackets. The mounting hole diameter of the speaker is slightly smaller than the hole diameter of the round plate I removed.

Let me know if you want more info.

Does anyone think having 4 4x6's PLUS a sub is overkill? Would I be better off with only the front speakers + Sub??

Rod ,
do you have photos of the rear ,ive heard that 6.5 have fit back thier, but I have not seen them.
May be I can keep my boston acoustic seperates and mount them in a custom bracket. How much depth is thier in the rear panel?

AndyK,
I dont think 4 ,4x6 is overkill ,4x6 dont have a lot of sound output,so I think 4 would be the min # of speakers.

I have 6.5's in the back openings. It was VERY simple to make a bracket for the openings, I will take pictures and post them when my car comes back to me. The 6.5's alone are not enough bass for me...I also have 6x9's in speaker boxes positioned on the backseat floorboards. Still debating a subwoofer install...as the setup sounds very clear.
