The 944 Haynes manual shows another way to hold the B/S sprockets IIRC. It was using two pin punches and a pry bar. It worked but was awkward..

yeah I saw that, but that's kind of a weird way to do this, wasn't going to try it

plus, can always use a jawed oil wrench
