Default Longterm use of gas with 10% ethanol

Is there any problem with using an ethanol mix in your fuel? Our state is mandating that all station have to have at least a 10% ethanol content in all their gas. Was worried about the corrosive properties of alky on the aluminum fuel system components. We had to use a top lube in my methanol burning race car or it would eat holes in any aluminum fittings and make a huge mess out of a carb.

E10 doesn't have any appreciable corrosive properties...unless your fuel system is already in a state of disrepair.

even E85 is debatable in its corrosive properties. people have shown tests of rubber seals and alum fittings submerged in E85 for months and there's been no visible expansion or material shedding.

methanol is totally diff animal than ethanol. ethanol is just grain alcohol. white lightning moonshine :P

I have been using it for years now in all my cars with no issues, ever. 951 included.

I used E10 one week to see the difference in fuel economy, couple weeks later car started surging till it shut off completely i had barely gotten up my street. First thing i did pulled fuel filter hole lot of crap in there. It was probably just dirty fuel but still never going to E10 but stupid australia is soon going to be making it mandatory.

that may have been the ethanol breaking loose gunk from your tank/lines/pump.

^ Ethanol is an excellent solvent. The gunk was most likely already in your tank. The ethanol simply allowed it to be picked up into solution where it clogged the fuel filter.

I have been using E10 in my 951 and 944 spec car for over 10 years. Really since I have owned them. Never any issues. It is the only 91 pump gas we get around here.

I know i should research it myself which i will do, but is there any way to clean the tank without gettting the crud through the engine/new filter?

disconnect the hose to the fuelpump and run ethanol through the tank and drain it
