Smile 944/968 Steering wheel revisited....

Thought I'd start a new string as the prior one was getting kinda' long.
Anyway I have had experience with the 930 replica by AJ-USA on a 928 that I previously owned and I really liked the wheel. I am curious though about the 960 Club Sport wheel identified as part number 968-347-084-00-8YR in the previous string. The embossed crest is a nice touch. The local Porsche dealer did confirm that the part number exists, needs to be ordered from Germany and costs $440. If I buy it I'm basically going on blind faith that it will fit my 1989 944, non-air bag. Can anyone out there boost my confidence that there will not be a problem, or any special tips for installation etc.... Thanks!

It should bolt right up. I thought about doing the very same for my '86 951. My wrench says all the steering shafts for 944/968 series are the same. The turn signal cancelling mech. may be different, though.......

Since my son and I seem to be the only owners that actually have this wheel I'll chime in and say it will fit just fine. The 968 CS wheel was made to work with non-airbag equipped cars. It should take all of 5 minutes to install since the new wheel comes fully assembled.

You'll need a 24mm socket for the steering shaft nut.

Even though this is special order from Germany you should still be able to get a discount. Try calling Carlsen Porsche at 800-523-2408. I spoke with them about it once and they only charged $15 for FedEx shipping from Germany. Things may be different now of course

I have taken the plunge and ordered the factory 968 CS wheel with embossed crest. Tom, thanks for your input and informative website.

FYI, I checked on the factory 930S wheel also. It was out of stock, and the wait was two months - which my friend at PCNA told me was "Porsche-speak for three months." So those of you seeking a cloisonne' crest may want to go with the AJUSA wheel instead.

I will post photos next week (or as soon as the wheel arrives). It was supposed to ship yesterday. Woo hoo!

Does anyone have a picture of this wheel. Will it fit a regular 968 coupe?

It does fit, as it comes from the CS 968. You do lose the airbag. Does anyone know if the sport steering wheels with airbags from the 996 fit the 968?

There's a picture in another thread on this subject or check the Cosmetic section of my web site.

The wheel will fit the 968 but it will take a bit of re-engineering to make the horn work. I have some details on my web site but unfortunately no pictures yet.

Unhappy

The local Porsche dealer here in San Diego informed me that the 930 CS steering wheel (968-347-084-00-8YR) has been on back order since September 2000 (yes 2000) from Germany. It seems there are two on order and this will be the third. It doesn't look like I'll be able to get one anytime soon - anyone know of any other sources?? Thanks!

Check the web link, pops up on front page... http://www.ajusa.com/ but looks like it may be temporarily unavailable.

That's not surprising since both the Porsche factory wheel and the AJ USA "930S" wheel are made by the same Italian supplier. If the Porsche wheel isn't available... guess this one isn't either.

I bought my 968 CS steering wheel about 1 month ago from Porsche Center in Berlin. Paid EUR 455, or USD 400. They had to order it from Porsche, so it took a few days to get, but the parts guy didn't say anything about being NLA.

BTW the part number for this piece varies based on what kind of car you want to put it on. Therefore, Porsche knows about the fitment, so I know mine will work OK -- it bolts right up.

If you buy yours from overseas, make sure you don't get charged the VAT. This runs 16.5% in Germnay, so the wheel should cost you around $345 plus shipping.

Hey HotDog...
After several mixed messeges from the local dealer about ordering from Germany, being unavailable etc etc they actually surprised me in the end and were able to get one. I didn't even inquire as to how. It wound up getting a 20% discount due to a PCA event perk and they installed it for no charge as a courtesy. I came out OK in the end. Thanks Hoehn Porsche. I'll post a picture shortly.
