Cool New motor = More VAROOOOmmmmmmm!

POWERRRRRRRRR… Thas what its all about right?

Well all, I think I have finally gone mad, and I do mean mad! I have completed the second round of discussions with Jon at Anderson Motor Works in California in preparation for a complete motor rebuild. Now you might be thinking big whoop. I for one would have said the same thing save for the outcome I am expecting. Well, this project has taken on a life of its own and is now boarding in the insane. We meaning Jon and I have come up with a plan that should put close if not right on, about 220 RWHP to the ground and keep the car street legal. Now you might be saying to yourself right, sure no-way or some other expletive that describes disbelief. I don’t blame you at this point, however, it has been stated before and I will quote it here again.

“When the green flag drops the Bull **** stops.”

Just to ensure that the Ney-Sayers out there are appeased I WILL be taking the car to the fist Dyno day out there, that will clear up any doubts as to the worthy ness of these claims and the power the motor being built for the car. You can count on it. Also to further this I will be attending every event I am able to attend to prove the longevity of the motors abilities see you on the track.

Details, details, details. I am positive you are all hungry for the details. I will tell you this. I had originally started this project on my own. Pricing out everything from pistons and crank work to the valve job to new cams etc.etc. What I found was that the cost of doing the work myself would quickly reach the 6K mark and beyond. After all the desired modifications and parts I realized that it was not necessarily a job that I should do myself, so I started to look around for a company that would and or could do the work and build me a motor that would serve two purposes.

1) Squeeze all the power possible out of the Sliver Bullet as possible
2) Maintain longevity with the motor “I don’t want to rebuild every 10k miles”

Jon has not only convinced me that it was possible he has explained the details in depth with me and has promised me more than I could have ever hoped for out of a motor. With that said you all are going to be whiteness to Anderson motor works abilities and just what Jon and his team can do. You all will be the ones running against this car and motor first hand so lets see where this goes.

The current plan is to, “with out complete details as I do not have all of them at the moment” is to do the following…

Block…

Bore and sleeve all cylinders with steel inserts. Machine all serf ices and bring them to a spec that will allow for this kind of power to be produced.

Knife the crank and machine and lighten the flywheel.

Replace the pistons with a much better and lighter system capable of 12:1 compression as well as lighter rods and bearings.

Replace all bearings and gaskets to complete the job.

And more…

The head..

Complete valve job

Possible cam no details at this time.

New turbo springs and replace all valves and lifters.

Machine the head to the needed tolerance and port and polish the all that is necessary.

A header will be added to this package and other things that I will go through at a later date. And a new tranny is in the works to cap off the whole thing.

Well that’s a general overview of what is about to happen and where it will lead. I can’t stand not telling some one about this so I thought why not every one. There it is, my loss of sanity is out here for your amusement and wonder. The project start date will be end of next month as I am removing the motor and sending it off at that time to Jon and his team. March will be the complete date and in the spring the monster, no the Silver Bullet will emerge from hibernation to reveal a new self. I just hope the pavement can handle my abuses come spring. Guess I should vote for more road money so the city can repair the damage cause by my lack of ability to keep my foot off the floor. “Just kidding”

That’s it for now A peak into an insane mind and a plan to keep me there. Opinions are welcome and wanted.

On a side note I am very impressed with Jon and his willingness to help appease my questions on this project. He has shown an understanding of engineering these motors that I have found comforting. I am looking forward to working with John and his team. Spend 10 minutes on the phone with him and you will see what I mean. Oh, and for those of you who will want pictures. I am positive that Jon will be all over that. Pictures will be available for each step of the project and immediately put on display for you all to question and admire.

There you have it. What more do I need to say, my intent it to have one bad @$$ 944 N/A, and to have a lot of fun with it in the process. I Can’t wait till I hear the first rumble coming our of my garage when it fires up for he first time. I think I will record it, kinda like taking a picture of a newborn for the first time. I think that’s what Frankenstein felt when his monster moved for the first time wan’t it? Mwhahhahahahaaa.

Be jealous, be very, very jealous.

Have fun but I gotta ask....For much you're spending, how far off the cost of a 951 will you be?

Not to incite a flame war, but I'd go with naturally aspirated power any day.

Welcome to the club ... My Stock Turbo S has by dnyoed to 230 rwhp /243 ftlbs... Heck even with 10hp dyno error I can't complain.

AS for the track.... There are alot of factors involved that generate speed and HP is just one of them. Case in point my 84 NA Race Car (stock motor) is faster than my stock 88 Turbo S... By 4 seconds no less....

I am really happy to hear how pumped up you are. I guess that is all that is really important. So what is the new displacment 3.1L????

This is going to sound stupid but this is not a question I asked of Jon. Geuss we will have to find out. I have to assume 2.8 or larger.

Jon car to chime in here? A little help please.

Na.. not a stupid question. I can tell you are really pumped up about this and it is easy to overlook the really simple stuff.
Of course since you are so pumped up it is probably better to have John doing the wrenching!

I COMPLETELY agree on the wrenching part. Yes I am excited about this rebuild. I have fallen in love with my little N/A. That's not to say I don’t want a turbo some day. I just can't wait to give the silver bullet some wings and take it out on the track to see Her full potential. This is truly going to be awesome and to think the turbo guys are really going to get a run for the money. Not to start a war here but think about it. I will have more power right from the start and better power acceleration out of the corners using the same tranny as the big boys. This will be more than interesting. I cannot wait till the fist DE/full auto X season she runs in. I’m sweattin already. The pucker factor should be enough to kill a small animal “Just a metaphor animal lovers out there”

The first time you drive it, you will be convinced that it is the best money you've ever spent. Dyno wil tell, but I wonder if the torque output will also be on par with 951's? What does Jon expect for torque numbers?

Talking

I just got off the phone with John and the motor will be a 2.8+ with some interesting things possibly being done to the head. As for the actual torque expected this is another one of those question that I do not know for sure however, in order to put tat much HP to the wheels their will be some considerable torque to speak of. Your right the Dyno will tell the tail and I will be posting all the number with out question. I will also post all known specs as they become available. John will step in here tonight when he gets a break from work and I am sure post at least some information. Keep tuned in for the information. It should be good.

Sounds great.

What are we talking for a price estimate? Is it a 3.1L monster? I am assuming that the DME would have to be changed.

Do you still have the stock brakes?

Hurray hurray!
Thank you Talbot, thank you!
Some else here "gets it"
I can tell by your list of mods that you are building a balanced car with all around performance improvements and not some ridiculous caricature of what the 944 once was.
Sure you can torture your poor little 944 and wring lots of horsepower out of it but WTF! Check the "don't mess with dad" thread, you can make ANYTHING into a dragster. The 944's are beautifully styled and engineered fine classic automobiles and deserve better than that.
FWIW I wanted to upgrade my engine with a unit like the one your ordering but to change out the suspension and brakes on my 1984 to work with the extra HP is not practical. So I am saving my pennies to buy a more appropriate platform at a latter date.

I also like the fiberworks nose, did you install that yourself and if so what was the PITA factor?

Have you thought about maybe changing the head to the 16-valve head?? I don't know if it's possible, but I think the 16-valve head would fit on your block.

That way, you can do all the work on the pistons and such and top it all off a nice 16-valve cherry. You wouldn't have to add headers, as I think my S has them....I know with that head, you could easily push the numbers up in the 250 Horsepower range.

Just a thought.......
