Post Heh, 450hp and 420lb tq?

Hey All,

Just talked to one of my buddy mech....he informed me of a certain 400ci engine that produces 420 ft/lbs tq stock...but low HP...bolt a corvette head on it, do a little bit of mods and you got 450 h/p! I have very little time right now, but I will give you guys the details later. It is a V8...it is a CHEVY...but I am doing this to a 84 944 I found in a junkyard- so I am saving it...I hope! Can someone give me the estimated performance figures for a 2800lb car with a 9000rpm redline...450HP and 420 lb of torque? Like top speed, 1/4 mi, 0-60, etc..

Regards!
Mike

9000 rpm? out of a 400 ci engine? What engine are you thinking about running.

And if you are getting those kind of hp and torque numbers you had better get a 951 tranny or a 968 tranny to hold up to it.

Performance, it would be quick.

Try searching for a program called "Car Test" or something like that.

That buddy of yours seems to be a great salesman...

I wonder what is included in the "do a little bit of mods"-part of it...

400CI Chevy turning 9000rpm? You'd better have a kevlar bucket on that motor our you will have shards of block and rods in your legs.

A lightweight crank, roller rocker, roller cam, and some serious valve springs would be needed. I know several drag cars that do not rev that much, nor a fully built NASCAR motor. They typically have a 9 grand redline, and last just about long enough to finish the race. Oh, they also cost about 40 grand.

Good luck! Please, bring that car back to life, but I think you are kidding yourself with this method.

Perry actually the NASCAR boys have those motors turning 9.3 - 9.4 K in the races now, or at least that is what the telemetry says when they show the races on TV. But yes that is only for a few hours and the motors have to be rebuild every week.

Getting a street motor to do it would be incredibly impressive, it would be the v8 that honda would build (rumor has it the next nsx will have a v8, so we will see what they can turn out).

If that thing is a 400 ci engine and Corvette heads will fit on it, it must be based on a standard smallblock Chevrolet engine. If that's the case, it must be seriously stroked. Further, you DO NOT want to spin a seriously undersquare engine to 9,000 rpm.

Do you have the bore and stroke measurements for this engine? Perhaps we could give you a feet per minute number and compare that to something like an F1 car.

Chevy did produce a 400ci small block from the factory. The reason they are not commonly used as performance engines is that the water passages had to be shrunk to get the extra cubes and they overheat terribly if taken beyond their stock horsepower paramters.

just clearance "everyting" and use mold springs inplace of valve springs.... and it shouldnt break right away. Smoke like a bitch at idle and probably get 20 mpq (miles per quart {oil})

The above is just a joke but your idea sounds interesting. Maybe you could post some serious specs on the whole thing.

Utter fantasy!
A 400 inch V-8 turning over 8 grand (just forget about the 9 grand fantasy) should be making WAY more than 450hp.....way.

A set of "corvette" heads does'nt flow enough air to make power above 8 grand and probably stops making power closer to 7500.
Why run a motor to 9K plus (as if...) if you're only expecting to make a feeble 450 hp?

what dribble....
