twisty mountain drive in BC (longish)

I just pulled the car out of the garage after what seemed like a long winter.
Checked the fluids, replaced the battery
my fault for not keeping it charged, but it had been a good one, lasted five or six years being stored in the winters.
Anyway, planned a run from Vancouver to Kelowna for the weekend via the old roads (aprox 5 hours drive)
Left Vancouver Friday just after lunch, took almost an hour to get to the #1 hwy, then a speed limit cruise till I hit the old Hope Princeton road just past Hope, about another 40 minutes on.
Then the fun begins, this road for those of you that have never been up this way, was the only way east from here till they built the toll higway, but the toll highway has two main issues, it's straight and it's well patrolled
the old hwy on the other hand has a couple of things going for it. It's twisty for hundreds of miles, there is no traffic and it is hardly patrolled especially at this time of year.
After settling in to a bit of a rythm and regaining the feel of the car after months of driving and suv I begin to push. Pushing hard through the twisty mountain passes and trying to stay focused and not enjoy the view of thier snow covered tops is a challenge but this car makes it easier.
The more I push this car towards the limit of my ability the more I realise that this is one amazing piece of engineering, regardlesss of the fact that it's 17 years old.
I can not imagine getting this thing unglued, it instills great confidence, even peering over the edge of some pretty high canyons at 100+.
Stock out of the box it's great but throw some cash at the suspension and wheels/tires and this car shines.
Having enough power to pass the odd slower car or semi is a great relief too, the old suv just doesn't cut it, having to give yourself loads of room to be safe, usually there is not enough road for this.
The cold damp air really helping to make power too, ripping up the long sometimes steep climbs of these awsome mountain passes is a rush, then the long rapid descent being made easy by excellent brakes.
Eventually arriving at my destination about 6 in the evening I have had a great run, even though I was on my own. Thinking how cool this run would be with a string of Porsches along for the ride and the banter that would go on at the next rest stop.
We gotta do this when the weather warms up, a nice early start, maybe an over night stay in Penticton and then an early blast back home.
I will post something soon and maybe a few of us can get together and do this run.
Oh well time to pack up and make the return journey, oh darn!

Last month my girfriend and I decided to drive to Kelowna in the 951 as well! Only we took the Coq, at midnight! It took two hours to get to Kelowna.
I think that says it all.

LOL Lance,
not at 165 mph
I'm biased for the coq, because when I was going to college at OUC, I'd drive home twice a month. I know every inch of that route like the back of my hand. That and two lanes per direction beats worrying about blind corners and oncoming traffic when you are stuck behind mr 60yr old golf cap in a buick century @ 50kph in a 100 zone.
lol
But my dad prefers the old route too... he says the scenery is better.

Hey Lance, count me in! Altho I am not a brave twisty guy
I wouldn't want to ruin it for the exp drivers to constantly wait for me
. So I might have to hang back on this one.
But sounds like a blast! Did you grab any nice photos?

Lance is right - that is a great drive at the right time of day/night/year!
But Rich, I hear ya on the fast times to Kelowna - the TurboS is the only car I've driven where I worry about outrunning the lights, and that is with H4 Bosch. Can't wait until I get my IceShark Cibie E Codes installed with the 90/100 H4's to match the Euro 100W DL I installed already. Then there should be LIGHT!
Hmmm... sounds about time for a 944/951/968 cruise again Travis! you ready with the camera???

You folks got some really exciting roads, i drove through kicking horse pass on hwy 1 years ago in a MG and rounded a bend right onto a fresh rock fall. bowling ball size rocks for about 100 ft. Completely removed the muffler, it was exciting for a while. I drove the road from Hope to Kelowna in a motorhome, i recall it went over some meg rock slide. I'd love to do that drive in a 944. Also a great run is to Tofino through PT Alberni.

Thats a GREAT streach of pavement Lance. Smooth too!! The best is early sun-up leaving Kellowna/Penticton west bound, that way the sun is always behind you and early spring or late fall,as you said. I've done it 34 times driving 12 times as a passenger/1 air speed trap but, who's counting? (Very awsome).Hey, we'll have to get together for a coffee and "DONUTS" meaning PLURAL ofcourse! Just say when and we will make best efforts to be there.

Hey Darcy, nice to hear from you, when are you next out to van ?
That Penticton to Vancouver would be a good run for the motec car. WITH ME DRIVIN lol
I finished off my suspension and upgraded wheels and tires since the last time we swapped cars, it really is a hoot to drive now.
Just need to crank up the boost a bit more
Take care and hope to see you soon.
Lance
ps here we are at Mission.
