Default 86 944 Power Steering Pump Whine

Hey everyone, I just put the insurance back on my 944 after 6 months of cold weather but I have noticed that when the car is cold in the morning the power steering pump has a fairly loud whine especially when the engine is not reving high

Is that the symptoms of a bad pump or an air leak? I have occasionally seen a small amount (and I mean a very small, like a drop or two) of power steering fluid under the car. Just wondering if anyone else has ever had this problem

Thanks in advance

Cheers
Kev

open the reservoir and check if theres little bubbles (aka air). If so keep the cap off and turn the wheel several times from one side of lock to the other while idleing.

Actually I lied, I just went to lunch and there was a bit of a puddle of power steering fluid below it.......I am going to have to take a look when I get home and see where its coming from, good old spring time surprises

I would love to just start one of my cars up in the spring and drive them, seems like there is always a few little things to go wrong with them over the winter.

If I need a new pump does anyone know of any good online places to pick them up? I have dealt with a few places in the past but its always good to get a few prices

Just rebuild it. That's what I did to mine. Worked out fine and it works now.
Here is the rebuild kit: http://www.rennbay.com/pump-944-powe...-kit-p-88.html

Most likely want ot get this, or you will still be leaking

Cool, I will have to see if it is coming from the pump or if there is a bad hose somewhere

clean up the area where the leak is coming from. It could be anything, the pump, the rack (inner tie rod), hoses, seals. I have a power steering pump of my 924S that works fine if you're interested.

Well I have finnaly had a chance to dig around a little under the car and it looks like the leak is somewhere past the rubber hose between the two hard lines. I replaced the rubber section but there is still fluid under the car this morning which makes me think it is the actual hard line heading towards the rack/pinion but I really can't see where the leak is exactly. Has anyone else had a problem with this line before? It looks to be in good shape with no rust or anything

Probably not the lines but the fittings. There are banjo type fittings and you can buy new crush washers for a few bucks apiece. Clean everything off good and see if you can tell exactly where it is coming from. While your at it, you might as well slide the tie rod boots back. If there is fluid in the boots, you need a new rack because the seals are blown.

I had the same problem with my car. Couldn't tell where the leak was comming from, turns out it was from the pump itself but the way it was running down it looked like it came from the hardline. I have never tried a rebuild, but I did buy a used pump from ebay and its been working fine. My only advice is that when you're replacing the pump, be very cafeful with the tensioning bolt -> it has a tendency to rust, and then shear when you're trying to loosen or tighten it.

drhoward, I'm sure you already know this, but don't use standard power steering fluid in these racks.

I topped it up this weekend with atf dextron, that's what it said to use in the owners manual. I will have to take a closer look at the pump its self, I'm really at a loss to where it's coming from

Having this same problem now with my S2.

How did your resolve the issue with yours? Is the pump accessible somehow without removing the rack?

yes

jack up the car, pump is on the passenger side of the engine hanging off the lower balance shaft, has a bolt in the back and a nut on the front along with the tensioner holding it in.

If you haven't replaced the pump in a while, I'd suggest spraying the bolts with a penetrant/lubricant. It tends to rust and is hard to remove. Also should have a tensioner gauge on hand.
