Hey everyone, i cant remember who posted this originally but i was trying to follow the directions for the LED keylight and i found them overly complex. Paper, tape, wire, solder...this is a key, not a bomb. Anyways, i found a much simpler way to do this and i have part numbers and pictures for ya too! Ok, this is what you need- </font>

• <font size="2" face="Verdana,Tahoma,Helvetica">5mm White (or any other color) LED 3.6 volt, 20ma 1100mcd RadioShack # 276-320</font></li>

• <font size="2" face="Verdana,Tahoma,Helvetica">2 - Energizer watch batteries # 389</font></li>

• <font size="2" face="Verdana,Tahoma,Helvetica">Approx. $10 (total cost for 2 batteries and LED)</font></li>

• <font size="2" face="Verdana,Tahoma,Helvetica">First open your key and remove the battery, copper divider, foam cushion, and old light.

• <font size="2" face="Verdana,Tahoma,Helvetica">Second, insert the LED light into the hole. The short post goes to the battery, and the long post gets wrapped securely around the copper pole. Keep the original spring!

• <font size="2" face="Verdana,Tahoma,Helvetica">Third, place the two batteries on the spring. Positive side up. The short LED pole should be placed ONTOP of the batteries. I had it to the side in the picture because it wouldnt stay without the cap on. When you assemble it, the pole has to be ONTOP of the batteries. If its to the side, it wont work consistently. <img src="http://members.rennlist.com/blues2/overall.JPG" alt=" - " />

• <font size="2" face="Verdana,Tahoma,Helvetica">Next, balance the cap on top of the batteries and pole. The pole should be sandwiched between the cap and batteries. Just get it to stay, it wont be secured until you close the whole key. Its a little tricky, as the batteries teeter a bit on the spring. Just try to keep it all together. Once its closed up, it will stay. (just make sure that pole IS ontop of the batteries when you close it up. <img src="http://members.rennlist.com/blues2/withcap.JPG" alt=" - " /></font></li>

• <font size="2" face="Verdana,Tahoma,Helvetica">Carefully close up the key. You should have a very nice button feel. Firm, yet good movement. I think it feels much better than the original. Now i have to wait til monday to do my other key because radio shack was out of white LEDs.

What about blue or red led? Should be simple enough, actually, if one wanted to do so.

Tony... excellent post! And now that I finally have my car on the road, I can focus on these finer details. First problem, my keys, don't have a light (department store duplicates). I'm assuming I can get these lighted key blanks at the dealer (85.5 944)?
Second, I'm impressed with your desire to help us out of the dark (for free!). So much so, that I would like to include your photos/instructions on my website. Will you authorize that? Bruce

Yeah, it is basically the same as the other post, but soldering isnt the most attractive activity to people that have never worked with stuff like that. I work on guitar electronics and stuff like that, so i solder tiny things regularly, and i would rather not have to solder, if i dont need to. Of course, it will probably outlast a non-soldered connection overtime. This new method took like 2 minutes and the button was set to go. I thought the paper thing, and adjustment was just a bit excessive. Actually, my reasoning for doing my method was i was too lazy to snip the LED posts. So hey, just wrap them into position and im done! I do thank you for the initial instructions! I hated my dim bulb. I couldnt see crap!

Devia, yes you can use blue or red. I dont have the exact part numbers for those though. RadioShack had blue, green, red, orange, yellow, and blinking ones. Personally i like white because its natural looking. I have green on another keychain and it looks cool, but if you need to find anything based on color, you are outta luck! As long as its the 5mm, it iwll fit right in! Just watch the ma (milli-amps). Some were rated MUCH higher, and these little batteries just wont cut it. I say stick with the 3.6v 20ma, but if you are looking for an LED torch, go for it! =)

BTW, if you cut a small groove out of the cap so that the wire that goes on top of the batter will be able to slide right in, it helps.

Yeah it does Matt! I was going to, but then laziness sets in. I actually gave it a once over hoping to find a notch already in there. Funny how ide rather just give myself a hard time balancing all three parts!
