Default Potential Fire Hazard?

my 83 944 is leaking oil onto the exhaust manifold and after a couple min of running it starts to smoke and smell bad. im assuming its the valve cover gasket? this a common problem? also how long does it take for new timing and balance shaft belts to stop whining? all responses appreciated

take car to diy power wash bay. spray down entire engine and get all residual oil off. then watch it and where its leaking. fix all leaks.

Should be a decently easy fix. Sounds like a cam tower gasket.

u prob tightened the belt too much. quick check is to twist the belt. timing belt should be twistable to 90degrees, balance shaft belt should be twistable to 180degrees. but that's sort of subjective. u need the specialty gauge to be absolutely sure

The twist method can get you in the ballpark, but it isn't the best method for final tension. There are a variety of belt tensioners out there, but the most favorite tends to be the Arnnworx set. I use them and have never had an issue.

Belt wine usually comes from overtightening the balance shaft belt. When properly tensioned it will seem to be "too" loose.

oh yeah, there way to tight then. i went with what the old ones were at. 180 seems really loose...doesn't that slap around in the plastic shrouding?

yea 180 is really loose. make sure the two rollers barely touch the belt. that'll calm the slapping alot.
