Default S2 and 968 speed reference sensor question

I'm about to do a clutch job on my S2, so first order of business is disconnection of the speed reference sensors from the clutch bellhousing.

A 944 is supposed to have two seperate sensors in a bracket, whereas the 968 only has one sensor.

My 1990 S2 seems to have the 968 set-up (one sensor) rather than the typical 944 set-up (two sensors). Pic below. Can anyone verify? Is this is normal for 1990 S2? (PET seems to be suggesting it should be a 2 sensor set-up.)

Question 1: How does this affect the steps for removal/reinstallation? Does it even still need to be removed to clear the bellhousing for removal?

Question 2: I was intending to "notch" my bellhousing to make removal of the sensors bracket unnecessary in the future if removing the bellhousing. Can/should this still be done with the single sensor set-up?

Thanks for any advice.

All S2s have one sensor. There is no need to notch the bellhousing as you do not need to reset the gap with the later sensor. Just unbolt it so it is out of the way to prevent damage (you need small hands - it's a real pain to get out and in). Don't forget to remove the earth straps to the bellhousing as well.

Thanks Eric -- that's cool to know. So just unbolt the lock bolt, pull out the sensor (and the sleeve?), and then when reinstalling, just insert it back in without further adjustment?

That's correct.

I have an S2 bellhousing mounted to a 968 motor and did this just a week ago. Personally I couldn't get the bellhousing to come out without undoing the sensor bracket which seemed to get caught up.

^ I think you're right about the bracket.

So am I back to notching the bellhousing (so I don't have to remove the bracket next time)?

I guess so. It would be preferable to set the sensor clearance with a feeler guage while the bellhousing is off and be able to leave it there. I've done the stuck on washer trick a couple of times now but nearly lost the washer in the housing the first time.

By the way, I am from Brisbane although it's been years since I lived at home, nice to see you guys on here! What is the used 944 market like there these days?

The 968 market is still strong -- you'd be lucky to get anything for <$35K, and asking prices can be $50K+ (although as we know, asking and getting are two different things!)

The S2s are next in price; you'd be lucky to get one for <$20K, and asking is sometimes still $30K+. Realistically, low $20Ks will get you a fairly nice example.

Next, the 951s -- mostly under $20K these days, but something a bit special can easily go well into the $20K+ range.

The NA market is quite soft, and a bit uneven -- later years more desirable than early, generally, but the range might be $5K - $15K, depending on what's on offer.

The overall standard and condition of 944/968s here is generally much higher on average than in the US; the higher purchase prices mean that they are better maintained in general. Although this may be changing at the lower end of the market; I must admit I'm starting to see just a few more of the rattier 944s driving around.

Interestingly, I've noticed a few instances now where early year Boxsters are going for less than 968s. Those early year cars are getting difficult to unload -- I think everyone sees those early engines as timebombs.

Anyway, that's my take, FWIW. What the market like in Dubai?

Well there aren't many 944s or 968s around in Dubai. Most have bee imported from Japan or US. I bought my S2 in excellent condition for about $6500 ozzie. I then ripped it to bits to build the race car, but looking at the prices back home, I cringe at the thought of all those parts that went in the dumpster!

There are the odd ratty 944s around for $2-3000. i could have bought a 2.7l for $800 recently which had a bit of an engine fire, but I only wanted the head and had no where to store the rest of the car. A few 968s have been on the market for 15-20 so generally a lot cheaper.

My car now has a huge amount of dollars in it now so I plan to bring it home with me in the next year or so. If I do I will be looking for a cheap right hand drive donor I can part swap to end up with a registerable car.
