anybody own a truck w vortec 4200?
its a 4.2l straight 6 which apparently is dead nuts reliable, and puts outt 270-295hp and is built really well. could be a cool swap candidate.
if anyone's got one, can i get some rough dimensions?

Hot Rod Magazine did a detailed write-up on these engines when they first came out, with dimensions etc. (since they were interested in what it could be put into). A web search should turn it up, was probably from the early 2000's?

Hey V2, I will eventually put the new high HP I5 from a Canyon in a 944. But I know for a fact that the adapter plate needed will fit the Bellhousing for the I6 as well. They both have internal slaves. The I6 will need a 1.5-2" hood bump

do you know the dimensions of the i-6 though? i think it would be a marvelous candidate for a swap, something a little out of the ordinary.
the i-6, i-5 and i-4 small truck engines are the same design just varied amounts of cylinders...

I only took a rough measurement of the I5 height about a year and a half ago and figure about 1" (maybe hood bump for it and @2" for the I6 since it sticks out further). The large plastic intake on these motors can be re-routed for hood clearance, and you are right, these would be great swap candidates because there is no exhaust/steering shaft interference to worry about and the factory 944 vacuum booster can also be left alone....2 thumbs up

If I was doing a swap it would be the aluminum Ecotec LNF 2.0 liter Direct Injected Turbo motor that comes in the Solstice GXP. 260HP/TQ and 300 on just a tune all stock components. Oddly I don't think its been done yet but it would be a hell of a motor to put in a lightweight early car.

My Trailblazer has the 4.2 inline-6. I can get some measurements for you, but it seems like it's alot taller than a 944 engine.
It would be a great engine in a 944 though. The powerband is a little higher up than I would like in a truck, and the 4-speed slushbox always wants to be a gear higher than it should be, but in a lightweight, manual trans car, it would be great. DOHC, 4-valve heads, aluminum block.
The only notorious weakness I can think of is the electro-viscous cooling fan clutch. I've had two of them die in the four years I've had mine. They're crap.
