Transmission fitment
I am thinking of swapping my automatic for a 5 speed. There is a 5 speed transmission for sale from a 1985 car that I am looking at. will it work?
I realize what else is needed for the swap.

depends- what year is your car? if its a late car-late dash-85.5+, the trans will need to have a speed sensor on the DS to work the speedo. Other than that obviously new torque tube, clutch parts, clutch pedal etc...

I did it on mine. Early manual trans in a late auto car.
You need a 2 gears and a new speedometer sensor. I can give you the 3 part numbers if you'd like.
Also to install the gear you much remove the driver side axle that connects to the CV joint.
With the transmission out of the car you can do this in much less than an hour.
Edit: you need the sleeve too I think... I'll get the part number for that too.
I ordered the sleeve from DC auto because I couldn't find it anywhere else.
Edit again... Im bored
pinion 088 409 197
threaded bushing 014 409 193 A
Pulse sender 944 606 210 00
Pinion Drive gear 016 409 187
I'll try to source them for you too... I think the pinion and threaded bushing are the hard ones to find which is why I got those used from DC automotive.
The drive gear actually goes around the "flanged shaft" that attaches to the CV joint. You just need to pull that out and install the pinion drive gear properly on it. It only works one way, but that will be clear when you look in there.
The pulse sender isn't the same for the automatic, it threads on differently which is why you need the bushing listed above.
Alright... off to sourcing I go...
OH WAIT... I actually have an extra pulse sender if you decide to go through with this. I can't let it go for free, but I'll sell it for less than whatever the cheapest you find it is.
I may even have a bushing out in my garage as well.... I'll go check to see what I have right now. Be right back.
Excuse my enthusiasm... The snow has had me trapped in the house for over a week now.

Wow you sure know your stuff!
How difficult is it to install the gear?
Funny you should find this thread, as I just pmed you before re checking because I searched, and found your name as someone with expierence in this area.

Does anyone know if the pre 85.5 transmissions have the threaded hole in them to receive the sensor?
When I did it to the 1987 924S transmission it had the hole, even though those cars ran with the mechanical drive speedos.
While we wait for an answer about the existence of this hole in 1985.
pinion 088 409 197 at pelicantparts $6.75
Pinion Drive gear 016 409 187 $17.00
manual pulse sender 944 606 210 00 $104
threaded sleeve $9.25

I'll put this here instead of PM for search reference.
The early transmission won't just bolt up to the late mount. Two holes would have to be drilled in the rounded parts of the top.
Noted in the picture.
If the holes WERE to be drilled then it DOES have the provisions on the opposite side to accept the lock nuts on the late mount. You can see these hex holes in picture 2.
And the hole for the speedometer sensor does not appear to be threaded, and also looks to be plugged. So that would have to be drilled and tapped most likely... I only assume it's not threaded because it wouldn't make much sense if it was.
If the holes were to be drilled the transmission should work just fine. That being said, it would be too much trouble and I would just try to find a nice one that would just bolt up.
If you find a transmission from a 924S then you can do what I described in my first post. Also it seems (from searching) that some transmissions from early cars HAPPENED to have the right holes for all this. But that doesn't make sense, and my not have been originally from an early or something...
ANYWAY.... If you wanted to drill these holes you COULD and it would work, but I wouldn't recommend it.
Hope this thread helps people in the future.
And if you have any more questions about your automatic to manual swap I'd be glad to help.
OR if someone else wants to buy a pulse sender.... lol. I have one of those brand new.
Some more info, because I'm bored... If you did go through with the work to do this, that hole for the speedometer sensor goes all the way through to just behind the seal. This is where the pinion shaft would go to meet the pinion drive gear that would need to be installed on the drivers side output shaft.
You can see in the picture the hole goes at least MOST of the way down, but I don't know for sure if it goes all the way through to accept the pinion. It's possible that it does so that it would be possible to pour transmission fluid in that hole if you wanted. But this is just speculation. I'm sure someone on here will find this, and know for sure.
