Question Help choosing battery...

I need to replace the battery in my turbo tomorrow and need some recommendations.
What kind of batteries does everyone use?
I notice there isnt much clearance. My dead Prostart is 7" high and barely fits.
Are there any particular models that are a little lower?
Thanks in advance...

I just had to get a new battery a few weeks ago. I use Interstate..they seem to work really well and I didn't have any problems getting it to fit.

Just get an "International Group 41" battery from one of the better manufacturers in the CCA rating you need for your climate. They fit fine and you can get a good one for well under $100.

Now if weight is an issue then it is off to Gel Land. More expensive and you are going to have mounting issues. But every pound you cut out is more effective HP and better handeling.

Gotta go for the Optima. No more worries about eating up the battery box.

Since I don't drive my car in the winter, I plan to get a small gel battery when the current one goes. 60 lbs down to 23: not a bad "mod".

When I discuss this at work, my friends get really irritated. I wonder why?

Consumer Reports rated the Champion batteries sold by Sam's as the best. I think they're made by Exide now. Sam's had them for only $50 with a 3 yr warranty and 3 years of free jump starts. I also got one of those battery mats. Do they really work? It was only $5.

I have an interstate and it works very well. It is even on its last legs and still works well. When I change I think I am going to go to an Optima though. No leaking and truly maintenance free. In the 911 it is a must to prevent corrosion in the under the bonnet. When charging the battery gives off hydrogen gas and some HCl gas. The acid gas can really corrode the metal under the hood. And everybody here knows what it can do to a 944 if the battery leaks. I would lean toward the Optima though if you plan to keep your car for a long time.

Regards,
Max

I ended up purchasing the same battery that I took out - a Prostart Group 41.

I believe the Optima to be one of the best batteries available. No electrolite, great service life, cold cranking amps and reserve. The only problem with them is that they are manufactured as a universal fit battery which means "will fit all, perfect fit none".

As usual for Porsche, they manufacture tune up items that have a specific Porsche twist. I believe they do this intentually. So when its time to refresh one of these wear parts, you must....or perhaps....SHOULD "buy Porsche"

The battery is in my mind one of these items. The Porsche "twist" is several fold:

1. A top post battery with clamp on cables.
2. Limited clearances in the mounting location.
3. Terminal layout, ie: Positive lug where most battery mfgs Negative lug is.

The inhearant "issues" from the Porsche twist are this:

1. With the top post terminals and the tight mounting clearances, you run the risk of having the terminals contact the hood. Should this occur you will have the dreaded "944 ENGINE FIRE" that has killed so many of our beloved machines. The Porsche specific battery has a special top to receive the factory BATTERY TERMINAL COVER.

2. A side terminal battery will not work due to the clamp on lugs. Side terminals require bolt on lugs.

3. The optima does not come with the +/- terminal aclimation that our cars are designed for. In order to install the optima one would have to replace the factory cables with longer ones, or (as I have seen people do) flip the battery and turn it on its side. Both senarios run the risk of terminal contact with the body as described above.

As much as I like to save a buck or like advanced technology, I will not risk the "DREADED ENGINE FIRE" senario..... so I run the factory battery with the factory terminal protector.

Porsche is happier. I worry less.
