Anyone have any experience getting a dash covered with leather as an alternative? What about anyone who has replaced a dash with passenger side air-bag? Fairly tedious but involved right?

I would really like to see a dash recovered with leather, the 965 in the family has a leather dash and it is beautiful, hand stiched along the front.

Not sure how easy / hard this would be though....

I gave it a go after my dash got ruined by a break-in. I must admit, I only had a day to do it, as it was sitting in a garage of a friend of mine in Germany, but it is an absolute pig! So much so, I abandoned it, and got a new dash off the insurance!

The ideal would be to skim off the vinyl coating, leaving the foam backing underneath, and then using some 'fabulous' glue, to recover in leather. I suppose, if you had the time, and inclination, you could also cut grooves in the foam to allow space for stitch lines.

I would think if someone has a couple of weeks, and a supplier of some nice thin leather, it would be hugely possible, but time consuming. The other thing is the durability of it. The original stuff is obsiously moulded in with the foam, which gives great adhesion, whereas just to glue it to the foam would definately not last as long. But hey, it has the potential to look great while it lasts!

If you know someone that works at a seat refurbishers or something, they would definately have the skills and knowledge. Do you just have the cash????

I don't have any dash cracks. For that matter, I don't even have a porsche. If I had one though...I'm sure it'd have dash cracks. All that I've seen, with the exception of a few, have cracks. I'm just trying to prepare for what I'd do.

I only claim the C4 Cab because it's my father's...I can drive it whenever I want. Which is more than he drives it. It's a garage queen.

I thought about recovering the dash I pulled out of my car (dual airbag dash)...honestly, I don't think the airbag is any harder than the non airbag...2 wires, and 1 extra bolt, then all the rest of the work is done outside of the car...after much consideration, and looking at all the space it took up behind my couch, I opted for chucking the old dash despite the allure of possibly recovering it in leather or even ultrasuede...just didn't make sense to me but it looks like it wouldn't be difficult, just a pita and time consuming to get right...

For $1380 though I could see myself doing this down the line, maybe not in the N/A I have, but if I ever get a Turbo or even S2 it would be worth it. Then again if I do it in the N/A I could move the parts over to a Turbo or S2 later on in it's life.

You made that car look like you dropped a lot more money that just $1380. YOur car looks really nice. I was looking for a nice set of bezels and I think that I'll end up getting those now since i saw how they looked. Will they fit on a 86 944?
