Default doing torsion bar with suspension still on

trying to do it by the tilt method...but having problem. i can't get the spring plate back on in the correct spline angle because the "tab" with the 3 holes on the trailing arm is preventing the spring plate from sliding onto the splines.

what am i missing? or is it really necessary to disconnect the axle cv and drop it all the way down?

Try disconecting the drive shaft from the gearbox and let the swing arm down as far as you can go.Although I have always done torsion bars by totally removing the swing arms or even in a few cases by removing the torsion tube aswell, usually because I was doing all the bushes and cleaning and painting the tube and spring plates at the same time.

i tried doing it that way when i deleted my torsions and after three hours of fighting to get it back together i pulled the axels and shocks and put it right together.

I had an extra pair of hands hold the trailing arm and move it so that I could slide the spring plate on. I would think you might be able suspend the trailing arm end with a jack or stand in order to get it out of the way.

Good Luck!

Sorry I meant to say to remove shocks aswell.I found that when you take the spring plate off more often than not they are badly corroded,if you burn off the inner doughnut bush you can separate the two halfs and clean them up this then makes adjustment much easier after you put them back on.Oh! I replaced the bush with one from a Volkswagen I belive it was an outer from a type 3 aircooled .

IIRC it is the one where the dashed lines from the #18 bolt are leading in the pic.

yay driver side done. it looks to be about the right height judging from where the position is by jacking up the lower shock mount until car comes off the jackstand. 13.5" from hub center to fender top. won't know until pass side is done and car is done though.. *cross fingers*

I will never believe this tilt method can be done without seeing pictures!
