Unhappy OT: Brake pedal to the floor?!?!

Slightly off topic as this relates to my wife's Alfa Romeo, but the brake setup is similar to the 944 so it might help someone else out too.

When you first hit the brake pedal on the car, it goes straight to the floor. You get some brake action, but it is really tough. If you let up on the pedal and push it down for the second time. Wow. Major brake action, strong clamping force, practically throws you through the window.

The car is a '93 Spider, four wheel disc brakes, ATE calipers, booster, etc. I "checked" the booster by pumping the pedal, starting the car, and the pedal does fall somewhat. The front and rear rotors have plenty of meat left, same with the pads.

What do you guys think?

Might have some air in the lines. The simplest (and free) thing you can try is to bleed the brakes and see if that improves it.

If our cars have some sort of overflow chamber maybe the first pump is filling up the system (had a strange problem like this on another car)...but its probably just air in the lines.

I'll pump a liter through the system and see if that helps. That brake pedal is just a little too scary!

Master cylinder died.
Possibly an internal seal between the two plungers.
This is not scary, THIS IS DANGEROUS.
GET IT FIXED NOW

I suppose Hans is right.
Don't let your wife drive that car!

The car has definitely been grounded. I'll replace the master cylinder ASAP, there is not much else in the system that is suspect.

I appreciate the prompt responses. I'll let you all know how it goes.

Again, thanks.

Yes, the seal between the plungers...this is a problem on mid-90's Honda Accords as well...seems to fail at about 80k miles.
Its very scary to push the brake pedal down to the distance you are used to, and have it go to the floor with out completely stopping the car! When replacing the fluid, you might try Super Blue fluid...

I am a big fan of the Super Blue, use it in the 944 and the Spider. The Spider already has Super Blue, no I might do the refill with Super Gold so I can tell when the old fluid it out!

Thanks again. Part ordered and on the way.

See if bleeding the brakes helps, if not, replace the MC.
