Post 951 Block

Do you all think I could find a used 951 block for under $450, or should I just spend the $450 to have mine repaired?

What's wrong with your block..?
What year is the car/engine...?

Keep in mind that 86 blocks are different in the oil pressure regulator, and balance shaft area. Lower balance shaft has a different cover and bearing cap for the rear, balance shaft bearing, is attached with a bearing cap that is separate from the BS cover and held on by nuts, where later engines have no sleeve for the OP regulator and the bearing cap for the lower BS is integrated into the BS cover.

These differences may be reversable, to the more modern style, but I'd hate to see you get a block, you can't use...?

Remember that if you hone the block to repair those scratches, you're going to need new pistons to fit the larger bore as well.

I am not totally sure on this. But I was under the impression you could not hone a porshe block with out restoring the coating on the cylinder walls? If you do not you run the risk of getting into the alluminum... I may be wrong I never actually looked into it..

The block can be bored, honed, acid-etched, then ceramic honed with cerium oxide paste. The pistons in your engine actually "ride" on a smooth layer of silicon carbide crystals embedded in the aluminum block material.

Having your block "repaired" might cost more than you think - my local shop charges around $700 for silica/aluminum block bore and treatment. It might be less for just a single cylinder - mine needed all 4 done.

Finding a single oversize piston is going to be tough!

Hey Greg,
What shop is that? My engine and car are in northern Va. I think that I am going to try and have all 4 bored to 106mm and use the custom JE pistons from SFR. It would be great if I could drive my block some place and not have to ship it.

So can any shop put a new sleeve in it if stock pistons are not used?

Maybe not ANY shop, but I would think a competent shop could.

Hey Chris, I am about to do a full rebuild on my car after the Road Atlanta blow up, have been talking to John at SFR about there 2.8 short block.

This will be my first engine pull, since you have done a few I will be asking some questions, ok?

Sounds great. This last engine pull was by fare the easiest. I was able to use the factory manual and PET on my laptop to make thing go a little quicker. I also got a small digital camera to document the tear down. This should help when putting it back together.
