Default Removing 924S/944 tail light lens

How do i remove the tail light lens without damaging it? I removed the cover with the bulbs but i dont see how they come off. Do i just pry it off from the outside?

they unbolt but they are also sealed in with weatherstrip goo. you have to cut them free basically, get a sharp razor or knife.

I got mine out of my 87' without using a sharp knife just a few weeks ago. After unbolting them just get your fingers in between the lens and quarter panel and give a little pull. If you have to use something use a plastic putty knife, you dont want to risk cutting the paint with something sharp.

Remove the 4 nuts and use a heat gun or good hair dryer to soften the weather strip seal and press out from the inside. You will have to buy some more w/shield 3/8 wide strip made by 3M from auto parts store to reseal new light or it will leak.

Cheers,
Larry

I have to pull my off as well when I buy the clear lenses kit (I've looked forever, where the hell do you buy it?). When you stick them back on, what sealant do you use? I want it to look clean? Mine right now is droppy and looks like ****. Lol.

(Edit) I was writing when my answer was posted. Ha.

Winter in NY might be the wrong time to attempt this. You'll get far better results if you wait just a few short months...

My 85 has a very bad exhaust smell inside the car. Someone suggested that the weather stripping around the tail lights could cause this. Anyone else had this problem?

Yes, the 944 is notorious for a sucking back exhaust fumes into the cabin from any holes around the rear. Apperently it is due to the shape of the car, but i have had lots of cars that have the same problem.
The common reasons for exhaust fumes in the car are poor tailgate seal, poor tailgate seating adjustment and poor sealing around the light clusters.

I am based in the UK, and my taillights had 6 bolts? I read above someone said four?

I used Butyl tape which is easily bought from ebay. Its soft and never sets. Add around the light cluster ensuring no gaps and gently tighten the 4/6bolts. Be careful though, over tighten and the bolts will snap.

Warm weather will definatly help the seal.

Good luck!

Does anyone know where I can get this hatch seal at? I checked with our local O'Reilly's today and they cant order it. Only have the generic seal material.

I’ve just done this and you have to smash out the lens , it’s the only way to do it as it’s glued in. Then you need to careful grind out a channel ( I used a drill attachment) so the new lens sits flush. Took me about 30 mins.

This indicates the lenses in your car were previously installed incorrectly. The original installation uses a non-hardening asphaltic material, similar to 3m caulking cord.
