Post what does defrost button do? blow heat?

funny stuff. ive never pressed the defrost front window button on my climate control unit ever until yesterday. just to see if it worked i pressed it. this is what it does:

it blows full blast level 4 heat out of the top vents!?

why? whats it supposed to do? doesnt matter if im blowing cool/hot air or even ac at 1 or 4 it will automatically blow super hot level 4 air.

what the hell?

i already removed my cc unit and cleaned the connectors so.. what gives?

btw. after playing with it some more later that day... somehow my vents actually blew some cool air out for once in a long long time.. no ac.. just fresh outside air i think.. and not heated.. wow. is my cc unit busted? can i fix it? uh oh.........

Nice wise @$$ response G96, too bad he's talking about the front window defroster, not the rear.

That is normal operation. It is a defroster, therefore giving full blast hot air.

Congrats.. it works! (or it did, now that it blows cool, I have no idea wazzup.)

It's actually a deFOGGER moreso than a defroster. Porsche realized that during rain (or other high humidity situations) the windshield can fog over rather rapidly creating very dangerous driving conditions. The best way to remove moisture fog is with heat, aimed directly at the windshield at full strength. So when you hit the defog button, that's what happens automatically - regardless of the set temp, fan speed or direction of the vents. Like the door locks, it's another way Porsche thinks for us.

all cars have a defogger vent usually. you have to set the middle dash vent to the up position so it directs the air to the windshiled which removes any frost on it. this usualy comes if your car is parked outside at nite and gets dew on the windshield. the cold air on a warm windshiled will fog it up and the hot hair will break it down

then, u have a DEFROSTER SWITCH that will take off any fog on the read windshiled. u cannot hear that working or anything. all you will see is lines on the rear window in which the hot wires are meling the fog off the back

Oh, doesn't the front defogger run the AC too, to remove moisture from the air???

Oh, I misread and it wasn't intended as wise-*** or snide. You sound excessively viscious today...still pissy because your car won't run more than 30 seconds? Oh yeah...to this day the only two people who have me AIM blocked are women, still true. You ph33r the master.

No, the defogger dosen't use the air conditioning system at all. It's more or less an emergency button to defog the windshield immediately, so it can't rely on the maybe-working a/c drier. To keep the fog off, just aim your air to the windshield and make sure the temp is warm enough.

On a slight deviation:

Yesterday, my A/C fan suddenly stopped working. I had it in my usual setting speed #1. I moved the **** to the #2 spot, and it came on...then stopped again. Wouldnt work till I put the #4 setting on!? Then, it stopped again. Left the **** on #1, thinking "great, $400 climate control panel". Magically, it started working fine...all settings produced A/C.

What gives?

My car has been fixed for a long time thanks to a Mr. Jay Cohen, who is quite a bit nicer than you.

You are blocked because you're an ***, plain and simple.

The function of the defronst button is to rapidly shock the electrical system in hopes it will either melt a wire, kill the alternator or both.

Anyone? I've been having the same exact problem- mine's done it a few times now- it will fade in and out too- usually wont happen if I only have the air on #'s 1 or 2. Any ideas?

Also PorscheG96- what's AIM? AOL Instant Messenger? ph33r? Just curious... Not getting involved in this situation...

Operator- I had always wondered about mine too- I just assumed it went on full blast to get rid of fog as quickly as possible- safety feature or something- I've known of a several people who have had wrecks b/c of their windows getting fogged up and having poor visibilty- time to pull over- not everyone does My '89 Integra took a LONG time to defrost after it had started, and it seemed to fog up all the time- the 951 does it a little, but I think keeping the vents set so the defrost vents always get a little air, helps a little, eliminating the need for me to use the defogger very often- I've only HAD to use it a few times- I can FEEL it when I turn it on too, kind of like the AC- definate power loss- glad to hear my "defogger" works like it's supposed to....
