Default speedo interchangeability 924's

I need to replace a speedo in a 1987 924S. Question is, are all of the "early" year 924s and 1986-8 924S speedometers interchangeable?

no they are not... the 924 changed over to the more modern dash and higher speedometers for the 1986 models... the other guys will probably settle the matter for you shortly.

Yes, they are. I'm using a '77 924 speedo in my '88 924S right now. The only difference is you will lose the annoying upshift light on the tach, because I believe it gets its signal from the speedometer. I considered this a bonus.

Wrong. 87 and 88 924S's are early interior.

Correct. You can also get a speedo for your 924S from any 83-85.0 944 if you want the yellow lettering. Or get it from a 924 Turbo if you want green lettering. Only downfall is most of the old 924 speedo's are 85mph speedos.

they did indeed update the interior and speedos in '87 to 160 mph as i remember it, now, not 86, pardon me, either way, you need to source the 87-88 cars for the speedo... if you guys say it IS interchangable, then how do you account for the run up to 1983 when the speedos only went up to like 85 or 90 mph ??

they can't be compatable with his car. no way. but the 86 speedo will probably work too.

that has to be the correct answer '87-'88, definitely, '86 probably.

They did NOT update the 87 and 88 924S...believe me, I owned one! All 85.5 944's had the late interior, but not 924's.
85mph speedos are swappable between the 170mph speedos...I've done it before and it worked just fine. I imagine it has to do with the gear in the speedo to account for the scale change.

You don't have to have an 87 or 88 924S speedometer. You can get one off an early interior 944. The only difference would be the color... everything that alxdgr8 said. Ha.

it never got the 944 interior with that bigger engine ? seriously ? that's odd because i have seen an '87 924S with the 944 dash and instruments just a few months ago at the repair shop. could it have been updated by the owner ? it had speedo to 160 mph.

Probably a conversion. There are a few people on here that have done it.
However, there are a few documented "prototype" cars that came from the factory with the late interior. I know there is a regular on 924board with one, but he's across the pond. I'm not sure any made it into the US.

very strange because the example i saw was like "hey this speedo goes just as high is my '87 944... nice interior..." i just assumed it was factory.

btw, what do you guys do for brake upgrades on these cars ?

Yea. There was a couple of 924S with factory late interiors when Porsche was considering redesigning the 924S. Long story short, it was cancelled, and only a couple of 924S made it out with late interior. One on which was sold in Germany, and the rest I believe are not known off. There is a guy on here however that has a factory late interior in his 924S. But he gutted it for a track car. Haha.

For brakes? I'm no genius on brakes... I know my car has something other than stock, but I didn't do it. Someone else should chime in on this. I eventually want to go with big reds.

924S was built off left-over early 944 chassis/interiors iirc. never changed the interior from early 944.

for the record, here is a picture of an early speedometer i sold someone here, taken out of a 1978 924 2.0L.
