Default Before and after...

My buddy Richard is a wizard with cars (both wrenching and painting) and recently did a repaint on much of my car as well as restoring my wheels.

We also took the opportunity to coat the wheel wells and chassis with Quiet Car which does seem to have helped quiet things down. Richard also turned a few wrenches and put in some new bushings, gaskets, new fluids, new brakes, etc.

The pics don't do it justice, but if you want to see the car in person, I think we'll be on the Norcal Pizza run this Saturday.

The wheels were painted with the tires on them, but Richard being Richard he spent quite a while cleaning, masking, sanding etc.

They had some serious dings on the curb side. Once Richard got to working on them he concluded that they had probably been touched up once or twice before so there was quite a lot of sanding and filling etc to get them to their now pristine look. We used the Toyota silver paint that others have recommended and the wheels are also clear coated.

They look amazing. They are 'just' cup 2's, but now they are pristine cup 2's.

The body had very few dings with the exception of a ding on the roof and some elbow dents on the front fender. There were lots of little pits in the hood and front fenders. The paint looked intact at first blush, but upon closer inspection was just pitted all over the place.

The nose had been really dinged up - including the loss of the bottom slat - so we purchased a new nose and the accompanying plastic bits. Richard also replaced numerous little rubber bits like the rubber around the nose, around the mirrors, the door handles and along the edge of the rocker panels etc.

Very nice! That bumper looks gorgeous. Man, Guards Red when it's clean and fresh is probably the most exhilarating color.

Those wheels look great. Will your buddy Richard do a set for me if I pay him - how much?

Looks awesome! Did he use clear on the respray, or use single stage like the factory paint?

Looking fantastic Phil

You mention "Quiet Car" which Richard used inside the arches ... Do you have any further information about this product or can you post a link as I can't find anything and it sounds interesting plus looks really clean?

Dit you paint the Quiet car body color or left it grey. I think black/gray wheel wells look good to.

Thanks for the thumbs up. Here are some answers to the questions.

1. Not sure about Richard doing work for others, but he'd probably be up for it. If you PM me with an email address where he can reach you I'll get you in contact.

2. The paint is base coat / clear coat. The paint thing is a bit of a challenge. The single stage paint is now outlawed. I don't know if that is all of CA, or just certain counties in CA or just what. Again, Richard being Richard he spent some time doing color matches etc. He also bought a new 'gun' to match the new type of paint. Low velocity vs High velocity or some such thing.

3. Quiet Car can be found here http://www.quietcoat.com/. The product seems good, but the quality of the application is all Richard. Again, he's got the right spray equipment to get that kind of finish. I think on the QuietCoat site they actually tell you what kind of gun you need to deal with the viscosity of the product.

4. I left the underside of the wheel wells gray. I'm happy with the look. I might consider spraying red over it only because that was the factory look, but I actually think I like the look of the gray better.

Still hoping to make the NorCal Pizza run tomorrow and hope to meet some of you there.

Phil

I'm surprised no one asked what was lurking under the car cover in the garage photos.

For the curious, that is an absolutely stunning Gt40 replica that Richard built from a kit. Painted and assembled in the very garage. An amazing piece of automotive art.
