Ok, after some road testing it has become apparent that the turbo transaxle just isn't going to work out in our '84. If all we did was freeway driving it would be acceptable but there is just too much zip gone from 2nd-4th gears when the driving gets interesting for my full enjoyment of the Porsche driving experience ! <img border="0" alt="[burnout]" title="" src="graemlins/burnout.gif" />
My first choice for a replacement would be a used '87 or newer transaxle, second choice (many offers already for these) would be a pre '87 NA transaxle, and 3rd would be to leave the turbo unit installed.
So, anyone have an '87 or newer transaxle for sale ?

If you ever go on track you will be unhappy with the '87 transmission. The car falls flat on its face once you upshift to 5th gear.
That said, I can't remember what years have a better 5th gear ratio.

The unit in our '84 at the moment is from an '86 turbo. The transaxle that crunched the r&p was the original '84.

Ok, it wasn't too clear in the PET. But, the factory manuals say that US & Japan cars received the shorter 5th gear in 1988. It also states that the 'rest of world' received the shorter 5th gear in 1985/2. It doesn't state this specifically, but possibly Canada received this gearbox in 1985/2 instead of 1988.
The gearbox with the shorter 5th gear is listed as 016J (5Y w/o LSD, and 5Z w/LSD). The gearbox with the long 5th gear is listed as 016K (5S w/o lsd and 7v w/LSD). The 016K was in all pre 85/2 cars.
