Post A/C compressor rebuild

My '92 968 has a leaking a/c compressor shaft seal. Is it possible to replace the seal on a DIY basis? (I will obviously need to get the AC shop to evacuate the system and subsequently refil etc.). Are any special tools required? What parts do I need, apart from the seal?

My local AC shop here in Sweden wants around 700 USD equivalent for an exchange rebuilt compressor, and around 1250 USD for the whole job so I hope there is a cheaper alternative!

cheers

Hejssan Derek,
check out this: <a href="http://members.rennlist.com/elsies911pal/NippondensoRebuild.htm" target="_blank">http://members.rennlist.com/elsies911pal/NippondensoRebuild.htm</a>

It's for 911, but that Nippondenso unit is the same as 944-968 models have.

Hej Olli!

Thanks for this, it looks to be just what I needed! One question though.... I think my car (and 85-91 944 cars) use the Nippondenso 10P15E rather than the 10P15C that is the subject of the repair in the 911 forum. Does anyone know if there are any fundamental differences between these two compressors?

cheers

Derek, I'll be curious about your experience with this. I think my a/c clutch is blown, and I've heard that's a pretty tough DIY job. Keep us posted!

It seems that the front seal replacement is covered in the factory workshop manual! The only disassembly required is removal of the clutch from the compressor. It may even be possible to do this repair with the compressor still installed. However, there are several special tools shown that are used to extract the seal from the front. I will call my local Porsche dealer to find out whether they can do this for me if I bring in the compressor.

I will keep you posted.

cheers

I asked from local Porsche if they have parts for Nippondenso compressor, the answer was no, only complete compressors....Local Nissan & Toyota have all necessary parts.I suppose Derek is right, you are able to switch that seal without removing the compressor unit from car.

I recently put a new aftermarket Sanden compressor in my 951 to replace a leaking stock unit. The kit with adapter bracket and hoses was $389 from Vertex. Its a pretty straight forward R&R but the good thing is (at least here in the US) you can switch to the much cheaper R134. Cools nicely even here in Florida. Good luck

My A/C compressor's mount broke (which caused all kinds of problems - another story). I pulled it off and took the clutch off - nothing too difficult. However, that is as far as I got. For some reason, I can't loosen the alien wrench bolts that hold the seal cover...
Since then, I fabricated a bracket to hold the pulley to run alternator belt, and am running witout A/C. Kindda tough in So Col at 106F like today!

Hope this helps...

Thanks.
