Default Route 66 trip advice

Hey everyone,

I was considering a Christmas road-trip to California to visit some old friends. I live in Texas, and was considering the idea of driving "Route 66". Round trip its about 4000 miles.

Does anybody have some advice on what to take with you specifically for the 944 in terms of potential repairs etc in order to be prepared? It is an S car - engine recently refreshed (including head, clutch etc). I do all my own work, so nothing is "too much" along side of the road so long as I've got a pair of vice-grips...

every wrench, socket and extension you own, especially 10, 13, 17 and 19mm
good set of screwdrivers
spare dme relay
spare ac belt lol

few qts of oil, gallon or two of fresh water (for the car, not you), brake/ps fluid in small amounts, paper towels, gloves (latex and leather)

thats usually enough for me to get to the grocery store.

Most of route 66 is no more, it was removed from the highway system in the mid 80s. You will have to jump on and off of the interstate to find the remaining pieces marked as historical highway.

As far as tools go, get a craftsman tool kit plus what Spencer said. Make sure you spare tire inflates and the pump works.

That's very true in NM, at least, and the parts that are left you need a 4x4 with 6" travel to keep your teeth in your head. But there are many very nice older US highways; check out US 82, for instance. I assume you are taking Interstate 10 for the trip west? or are you going on I-40? I-40 is the replacement for Rte 66. I've made the trip many times, my advice --if you want scenery -- take 40 unless there is bad weather. Very scenic except around San Berdo. I-10 is brown and ugly, but rarely has bad weather. Plus I-10 has several Border Patrol stops that really get jammed up (45 minutes sitting in line about 50 miles east of San Diego).

If you really want to make a trip thru the mountains on back roads, take I-10 to Las Cruces, go north to Socorro, West on US 60. This will take you thru the Apache Nat'l Forest, across the continental divide on 2-lane, across the Mogollon Rim, dropping down thru the mountains into Globe and into Phoenix, where you can pick up either 40 or 10..... like this

My spare tire is 15" early offset and my rims are 17" late offset - think it'll be a problem?

I cant fit all the wrenches, sockets, and extensions I own in the car haha! That would be hilarious.

Ill bring 3/8 sockets in 8 10 13 14 15 17 and 19, 3/8 ratchet some extensions and breaker bar. An adjustable wrench, vice grips. Box end wrenches in 10 13 17 and 19. Phillips and straight screwdrivers, Some cheeseheads, some metric allens, a multimeter, spare wire, crimp connectors .........Anything i am leaving out here?

I would try to fit the spare before you start out, not sure what problems this might cause if any.

I was thinking of a contained kit like this. Just add the screwdriver etc. you listed above to a tote bag and you are set.

I always take a tire plug repair kit with me. It's easier to make a repair than hope that 25 YO tire is actually safe to drive on. Just make sure your compressor works and you have a AAA card as back-up. Buy a Navajo Taco in Flagstaff and use that for a spare.

We did parts of Route 66 this summer on a 2,700 mile motorcycle ride.

Couple of cool little places when you get off the highway. Your car should be fine.
