qoute: we buy the car to fix them not street race them

Well said Travis!!! Does anybody that street races woork and pay for all the work on thier own car?? Out of thier own pocket and not from thier parent's allowance? Did they buy the car with thier OWN money?? Most likely NOT.

Every street racer I have met around here drives an import thier parent's go tthem, and the only thing they pay for, is the performance exhaust and strut tower brace.

None of these kids had ever spilt blood on thier car from working on it. None of them have the kind of respect for the car that many of us do, because of all the work we put into our cars.

This is why they street race. They wouldn't have the money to outright buy thier car, let alone be able to track it properly. (Expect AutoX - but you can't drag race others at an AutoX)

I think there has to be a STOP put to kids driving on thier parent's insurance in cars owned by thier parents. I think that would put an end to a lot of street racing. NOT ALL, but a lot. And most importantly, it would stop the kid who have no respect for the value of thier car (because they didn't work for it) and the value of thier life, from putting others in danger.

Also, the kid may well have crashed during "light" speeding, and not street racing, but he IS an admitted street racer, and young driver. A similiar incident occured here in the outskirts of Vancouver where some young kids in a 5.0 gunned it passing a car, and lost the rear end, and crashed. Fatality. No racing, just inexperience in a high output vehicle.

Bottom line, even though MANY of us enjoyed the freedom of it, nobody should be cruising around in a car thier parent's bought and insured. Trust or no trust.

(altho it works out funny but anyways this isnt 100% the case) I do not however get any money to put into the car. I didn't recive the car in working order and I have spilt alot of blood working on my car. I have done countless hours of bodywork and mechanical work from my sisters inability to drive (she should never of had a car like it she is a stupid driver that doesnt know anything about driving) I put a new clutch in my car along with rebuilding the cv-joints the best I could I replaced and fixed and cut and sanded the cars body to its current condition. (also note that I had a $3000 paintjob done on the car paid 100% by me 5 days after its repainted my sister takes a nice chunk out of the car hitting a brickwall when pulling into the garage.) 1 month after this she totals a jeep when it rearends her after see spins it in the rain across 3 lanes of traffic (Parents still let her drive it and there is nothing I can do.!!!!) After that my other sister says my car was hit and run in the YMCA parking lot.(I think she hit a gaurdrail)So back to sanding grinding and everything else but I couldn't get it right I wasnt able to fix it.(then about 4 months ago a idiot in a honda acord rear ends me and I used the insurance to fix that side (hehehe) but I had to pull bumper out 1/2 inch no other damage. Right now I am getting the transmission rebuilt and I am going to be putting that back into the car. With 4 new CV joints. I am also putting 4 new koni yellows on the car then getting it re-aligned.I also in the mean time am tearing apart the camcover to replace the plastic ramp. (this will all be payed by me exept the rebuilding of the transmission)

My point in this rambling is street racing can have extreme consequences but- driving spiritedly, and prudently, is ok from time to time. Just don't do it where someone could pull out from a side street (ruling out any city streets) or losing it could result in close encounters of the arboreal kind or worse. Want to know what kind of car my parents gave me? A
1990 Jeep cherokee. Before I had my license, I would take the "back way"(the woods) to work on the farm where I was earning money to pay for the jeep. Then one day running a little bit late, I decide to step on it in a little tight section, hit some mud, and a little bit of driver inexperience later, hit a tree and it fell on top of me.
Wasnt as bad as it sounds but probably 60 hours of cutting and bending and surprisingly only $350 later, I get to drive a 1990 Jeep cherokee with a different color fender and grill surround into the high school parking lot(the ladies love it). Working on that thing to get it running in the frigid 5 degree weather when the air tools were even freezing up, taught me a pretty good lesson about driving recklessly.

You can't afford to insure your own car, but you can spend $3k on a paint job? I'm confused!

Rich: I don't think that making kids pay for their own insurance will somehow cut down on street racing. You'll just have a lot more kids racing with no insurance. I do agree that paying for your own car and the repairs on it will make you have a LOT more respect for it, and therefor less chance of pulling some stupid racing moves.

I don't insure the car because that wouldn't be fair since my parents have payed for the insurane for both my older sisters. I used to have a job working at my HS on computers. (lets no go there) Anywho, I never spend a dime so I have plenty of money for repairs even today. Also the car was so pretty looking but my sister is the worst driver ever (her insurance was lower then mine at my age to even though she had atleast 15 accidents.) Ohh don't get me started on insurance and boys vs girls statistics because I know that this statistic doesnt justify price differance.

Reading this made me realize how stupid i have been in the past and how much of a kid i still am at 19. Its funny how somebody has to die to accually make me realize how precious life really is, and its not worth a short little 30 second street race. everything is all good, and the next moment, your gone.

THis just made me think of a kid who went to my high school last year (senior year, i think he was a soph). the first week of the 2002-2003 school year he was on his way home from school in his jeep cherokee and decided that he was going to race with his friends. He had 4 girls with him mostly 14 year olds , one was his sister. They were driving down a 2 lane road (no lines or anything) well above the 25 speed limit, and blew a 2-way stop. His cherokee plowed into the side of a semi-tractor trailor hauling a full load of gravel (school is on a gravel route, vegas sucks). He was killed instantly and im unsure of the girls, i think one died, but all were in the ICU for a while. Ryan Sneed, he was only 16.

Damn. Life is way to precious to throw it all away for a little ego boost. I know more of us kids will race and more of us will die. I just wish that everyone would read this and apply it to their lives like they say they will. Really apply it, not for a week or 2 then let it fade away, but always remember at least 2 young kids that died making the mistake that you are about to make.

Poor kid, pity his family.

When I was 16 I bought a 71 GTX with a cracked block, bought a retired state police car took the 440 interceptor out of that added my 6 pak, heads and cam.

Viola! Just what every 16 year old needs, 400+ hp, stomp on it and sideways at 40mph.

God looks out for children, fools and......

I thank God that I made it this far and my 15 yr. old son won't learn that way.

it must fail to be realized that yes, street racing is dangerous....so is 'legal' racing....so is driving a car.....so is walking down the street. now, street racing will increase the risk of being killed, but i don't think there is any 'safe' way...maybe 'safer' on the track is more true. people, just don't do stupid ****. i hate stupid people...

I really cant think of any 17 year old I know who didn't drive like an idiot at one time or another including myself. Thinking back at the times I raced 2 prelude SIs with my 86 200sx at big bear with patches of snow on highway 330 and 18, I am thankful I am still alive now. No matter how slow the car, kids will still find a way to do something stupid, I know I did even with an 81 accord, let alone my gsxr 1100. It would have helped me if there were inexpensive tracks all teenagers can race on with instructors to get the need for speed out of my system at that time. Kids will always be kids and we all should look for a solution instead of finding a group of people to blame. I think street racing is stupid, but I was guilty of hauling butt next to someone every once in a while especially when I had my stick vette. With all the billions of DMV fees here in California, I think there should be an additional test to the new drivers on how to handle their vehicles in emergency and extreme conditions and make drivers license harder to obtain through more rigorous testing. Some people here in L. A. drive like if they got their license from a cracker jack box.

Last of all, I wish there are more inexpensive tracks where people can take their cars and not have to street race. I remeber days where $10, a tank of gas, and tires were all you need to race all day at the 1/4 mile strip. What I would give to have that again....

This story isn't about street racing, but wreckless in general.

Anybody from the Chicagoland area might have seen this story on CLTV. Friday night in Lockport 4 teens were driving along a road. This particular road is narrow, twisty, hilly, and surrounded by trees 1 foot off of the road. The driver (16) wasn't paying attention, and then swerved to miss a mail box. The car skidded, hit a boulder, flipped on it's side, and wrapped around a tree.

Two of my friends died Friday night, one just a block from her home. They weren't drunk or high, just speeding and not paying attention--like many drivers on the road. Now 2 people are dead, one was airlifted in critical condition, and the other has taken to a local hospital in critical condition. There was no street racing, no drugs/ alcohol, just wreckless driving.

I don't know what point I'm trying to make here, but I just needed to get that out.
