Sheet metal rattling noise - muffler?

Burning Brakes
Rattle from Clutch Shield
I had this exact rattle (I think) and thought it was the exhaust...
Turned out to be #21 -This shield keeps debris from getting up in your Clutch/Flywheel area..
There should be little dampening pieces that absorb vibration... There was only one left on mine... Everytime I would accelerate a low speeds "Rattle Rattle"
When i did my oil pan gasket i removed this piece, and no more rattle; (speaking of that... I don't think i ever put i back on.)
If you go to the back of the oil pan you will see it... Black Thin Sheetmetal. Tap on it... it might just sound like the rattle you are hearing.. it's only two bolts... Remove it and test drive..
Hope this helps,.
Let us know....
Cheers,

I had the same issue with the #21 piece I just removed it. also check for hair line cracks in the old welds. I just found one at the collector and when I dropped the exhaust to repair the whole thing fell apart. two minutes with a welder and all fixed. And don't forget the heat shield for the exhaust manifold. They have a tendency to rattle a bit.

Mine was broken on one mounting side and the other was cracked. I didn't even need to remove the bolts to remove it, it was so bad. It just hasn't been high on my priority list to weld back together. It has been off now for 7 months.

Just fixed my exhaust rattle a couple of weeks ago. Mine was a very "tinny" sheet metal-like rattle as well. Replaced the cat and simply could not and still can not believe the difference it made. Power roll-on is smooth as butter now. Flow must have been really restricted with the old cat. Night and day difference.
Ultimately tracked mine down by having my wife hold the car at 3500 rpm (most noticable spot for my rattle) as I poked around with a long hardwood dowel (kind of used as a stethoscope). Coincidentally, as I went to check the cat, just the pressure against it with the dowel caused my rattle to cease. Exhaust shop confirmed the problem. $250 later, I've got what feels like a whole different car.
Best of luck in your search! These phantom rattles/squeaks/knocks can just about drive ya nuts.

i swapped out my muffler and it didn't do the trick. so i have a spare 02 muffler if someone needs it. also, just swapped out the right rear catalytic converter. not sure if it did the trick. still a slight rattle. but no CEL, so i assume the original cat is still good too. so i have a spare if you want that too. how much do scrap metal places pay for these items?

Serious theft issue. I don't know if there's any value really. But i never figured thieves for being very smart anyways. I was surprised to read about the rattle in cat though. I always figured it would cause drivability issues first.

I thought I had an exhaust rattle and finally found out that one of the brake anti-rattle clips (a small wafer of metal that rides against the pads to keep them in place, aka: spring lock) had snapped and fallen out. My pads were rattling and it sounded just like the exhaust was rattling. Even my local Porsche specialist didn't diagnose it right.
Just thought I'd throw that out there just in case you are still looking for your problem.
