Post Chip for NON-TURBO 944

Does anyone know if I can put a chip on my 1984 944? If so, what brand and what kind of increase in performance can I expect.

Thanks,

PorschaPete

I've researched this a little bit. It seems that we lucky ones with the early cars need to remove the whole box, and send it off to be programmed. I was talking with one of the tech guy's at Winward Performance, and he stated that the Autothority reprogram will get you a 10-15% increase for about $400.

10-15%? I'd have to see that for myself. All it does for an NA is raise the rev limit a lil bit. I wouldnt imagine you'd get more than 6-7hp, tops.

Now that I think about it, 15-22hp does seem like a huge gain. The guy at Winward said that it raises the rev limit, but also allows more fuel. Mine had already been chipped (reprogrammed if you want to be technical-early car) when I got it-so I have no frame of reference.

He did also say that the best low buck things to do to an NA were remove the cat-and open the air filter.

I switched to a 944 from a 1970 Chevelle SS, so I am still learning just how these things work...but diggin it.

Are you willing to give the whole DME unit???
In the 1984 DME unit the chip is soldered into it's place.'85 1/2 has the different kind of DME in which Chip is installed in socket.

I just got the Power Prom chip from FR Wilk. What an excellent upgrade. I was very skeptical before I installed the chip. I was hoping at most for about 4 horsepower. After I installed it I'm figuring it added close to 15! Here is what this chip does(to end all the discussion). First of all, my chip does not even raise the rev limiter although some do. The chip increases ignition spark advance which is an *almost* gurantee of a few horsepower. The chip also forces a lower air fuel ratio by ignoring the oxygen sensor and going to a preset ratio. This is where most of the power comes from. More fuel is being dumped into the cylinders with more spark advance. This means more energy relased and more power!!! When I really get on the gas in 2nd at about 4000 rpm, the car just takes off. Very noticeable improvement. The only bad thing is that you have to do some pretty involved electrical work to install the chip. The early cars do not have a removable chip and an adapter board must be added by removing some roms already soldered in the board. Not easy at all.

Here is the url of FR Wilks website. He was very helpful with all my questions.

When I chipped my 85.5 with a autothourity unit I was pleasently surprised. It woke up the car and made a big difference.

Just remember that 15 horse is a big gain in a car with only 150 horse to begin with. Especially in a car that only weighs 2800 lbs.

That is a 10% horsepower increase. I think that some people think that these upgrades will make a 2.5L engine feel like a tire frying monster. There is only so much that can be done with fuel mixture and timing. Which is what a chip plays with.

The NA 944 just need a bit low end torque to feel right. Show me a bolt on that gives you 15 addl. foot pounds of torque under 2500 rpms and then youl have something.

My brother's '84 NA is chipped with the autothority. It gets up pretty well considering everyone says the NA cars are slow. It doesn't have the grunt that my S2 does but after 4k it's a rocket, and you get up around 60-70 and it's quite fast. Granted the car had the chip in it when we got it, but I've ridden in an 87 NA and it's noticeable quicker than that...

I would suggest someone, but I think the quick shift points and flux capacitor maps for the Twin-Turbo 924S are not yet ready.
