?? Huh ??

I assume you don't mean: above the valve, but below the cam.

if u got the order mixed up....well then yer just shooting in the dark. not absolutely catastrophic...not like throwing a rod catastrophic.

Yeah, Ideally you put them in the bores they came out of. If that got messed-up...

Just stick them anywhere. There is not way to link them any more. Don't worry about it as some guys swear by it, but I have mixed them to no ill effect.

They fell out when I removed the camshaft housing. There are numbers stamped on them, would they mean anything?

They don't have to go in particular order, since they're hydraulic. Regular lifters have shims to match the valves, but the hydraulic ones adjust to fit (once you get them pumped up).

As far as people "swearing" by it... mostly BS. The only advantage i can see is matching the wear patterns, but then you'd have to keep their orientation the same also (aka have the hole pointed the same way relative to the cam tower)
