Default Rebuild 2.5 N/A Head Question

I’m looking at rebuilding a 2.5 N/A head. What should I have done to it besides the standard work? Would a hotter cam or other work help it breathe a little better? Since I will already be having the work done I figured I would get any upgrades that would make sense.

Don't forget about replacing those valve guides.

Port and Polish, Angle Grind, Valve Guides a must, maybe new springs.

I would hold off on an aftermarket cam, alot of money and not alot comes from it. If you have an early 944 I believe the 87+ had a slightly better cam? Correct me if I'm wrong.

If your 944 may eventually end up being a Time Trials or Race Car then be careful not to do any work that is against the rules. If it's just going to be a DE car then knock yourself out. If you can find some Euro pistons or forged Turbo Rods that would be a good upgrade too. Go to 944Cup website and look at SuperCup rules for 944 8V N/A allowances. There are some good ideas their too.

I was curious about headwork too (incoming ignorance)

I've picked up a used head (taken off of a good engine) and was wondering how I should go about getting it prepped to go on mine. Nothing's been done to it, still dirty and everything.

What are your reasons for switching heads first of all? If you are just replacing a damaged one then the first thing to do is dissasemble the donor head. Have it hot tanked or steam cleaned to get all the dirt off it, have it inspected to make sure its not warped or cracked. May need a valve job to clean up the valve seats. Then time to re-assemble.

This is what the Pros do:
http://www.benms.com/944head.html

Also check the lifters:
http://www.benms.com/944lifter.html

INA lifters are the OEM standard for new replacement lifters. There have been a few posts indicating INA lifters fail and you may want to consider used lifters.

So that's the guy they usually go to?

Emailed and they said I can send in the dirty head and it'd cost $400 to fix up

A cam is worth it IMO.

You can just call a few machine shops in your area. A couple of years ago, my cost was $200 for the machine work. No valves and the valve guides were within spec. Add another $130 or so for the head gasket set.

Call up your local NAPA or local Porsche parts supplier and see who they use. The head is a simple 3 angle grind. The minute you say Porsche, a lot of shops say they cannot do it.
