Since we're on the topic of timing belts...
Do they often just strip without warning or is it common for something to seize and rip out the teeth?
Mine ripped out a bunch at around 4krpm with no warning on a 3 year old belt, just wanting to diagnose.

I've got two belts removed from cars with documentation showing them to be 6 - 8 years old, 20-25k miles and they have absolutely no evidence of cracking or wear. Would I use them? Hell no. But like I said earlier, I'm convinced failures like yours are most often tensioner or water pump problems that ruin the belt.

my car still ran fine, I wish I had known what to check for - I would have checked the belts first thing and taken out the balance shaft belt - would have been MUCH cheaper and faster then what I ended up with
oh well, live and learn
rebuilding the head here at home - what parts would be needed? new valves obviously, springs, guides? what can be done to the head itself as far as machine work (nothing extreme)?
