Talking Help removing old stone guard decals

Hi...need the Rennlist touch on this one...I have a 88 944 and just ordered new stone guard decals...what I'm wondering is how to remove the old ones and what a guy should do to prepare the surface for the new ones...

Thanks <img src="confused.gif" border="0">

use a heat gun or a hair dryer and get the old stone guard nice and hot, then scrape it off with a hard plastic scraper. i did this and ordered new stone guards, but i didnt put on the new ones. i have been without stone guards for over a year and i haven't had any chips on that area, so i'm not gonna put my new stoneguards on. good luck.

i just did this, do exactly like he said and use a hair dryer and scrape. For the adhesive I used a combo of an eraser pad that fits on a drill (you get them at automotive paint supply/napa, etc.. about 12 bucks or so..)
They take the adhesive right off in seconds!! Then go over with a little adhesive remover or goo gone to get anything left behind..
tada...

i havent put new ones on yet, so i cant help there

I just did this. I would clean the area with some of that meguair's final touch stuff first . I did not use a heat gun or anything like that, just the eraser pad and a drill. The eraser pad will build a little heat and then the stuff comes off like a charm, it just takes awhile to do the whole car. I would then use goo gone and soak the leftover adhesive residue and wipe it off.

It was cool to see how good that time capsule paint under there looked! I then took a little clear coat cleaner and wax to make sure the whole area looked nice.

To install the new ones, spray the paint down with 50/50 rubbing alcohol and water. Then remove the adhesive sticker and spray it down too. Line up the bottom of each piece with the line where the underbody coating on the side sills is and allow ~3mm from the wheel opening to where the adhesive guard is. Keep it wet with the spray so you can reposition as needed. I used a bondo spreader to squeegie each piece. use a pin to drain any residual air bubbles.

This is a pretty easy but time consuming job. The key to keeping bubbles out is to keep it very wet and sqeegie from one side the other. The hardest ones to line up were the large rear ones. The car looked so great after I completed this one....good luck,

Jason

I saw some black magnetic ones in tweeks for the boxter. It looks like it shouldnt be too much trouble to trim them to fit a 944. As I recall they were around 30 bucks for a pair.

I don't have it handy, but Excellence ran a 'how to' article within the last year.

My info goes by what the excellence article says, I used that to help me, so I cut straight to the chase and got the eraser pad.
