Default porsche 944 oil pump

Hi guys,
wanted to say thanks for the help so far i decided to go ahead and fix the lack of oil pressure problem, i have narrowed it down to the oil pump, i have bought another used pump but i feel this is not the right one, i was told it was from a 1985 Porsche 944. The problem is the numbers are not the same. But it bolts up fine the only noticeable difference is i ordered a new crankcase seal and it does not fit the new oil pump. Therefor this leads me to believe that i have a pump from a turbo car possibly, i would assume the pumps would be the same for n/a cars. any help would be appreciated

for reference i have a 1984 944. I bought a what was told to me a 85' porsche 944 oil pump.

Actually it may just be the seal. The 83 seal is a different size than the rest... as the 83 oil pump is different. I found out the hard way too.

Someone correct me if this is wrong but I think you can't use an early (83-85.1) oil pump on a late (85.5+) engine. I would assume this applies the other way also. The oil pumps changed at the early/late model change. Is it possible your purchased oil pump is a late 85?

well if u need, i got a 83 engine that i just blew up. i can take the oil pump off that one.

but are u REALLY sure it's the pump? cause the pumps don't usually go bad...there's nothing to go bad with them. more likely it's either priming, oil pickup, or oprv or bearing issues.

Did you open up the pump gears? How did the gears and housing look like?

If you opened it use Loctite to seal as described in factory manual.

i have not opened the oil pump yet, but i did do the check process i found on here. Tightened the crank bolt, along with pouring oil down the oil filter and turning the crank counter clockwise to prime. still got no oil pressure, then tried taking oprv out and crank the motor with no oil coming out.

When i took my oil pump out i turned it and every rotation i heard a strange sound, as if something was loose inside and dropping after a rotation.

looking a little closer on the pumps the one i took out of the car has a 5r on the oil pump and the one i purchased used has a 9r. I am thinking this could be a late model 85' oil pump.

If anyone on here has a 84' or a oil pump i could purchase from this let me know. And again thanks for all the replies.

Did you check the oil pickup tube for cracks?

Yes i checked the oil pickup tube and found no cracks that i could spot.

I did in turn then pull the motor as this made it much easier to work on the engine i have found instead of fighting with the engine bay getting in the way.
