Spare Tire Compressor Pics?
Folks,
Could those of you with OE spare tire compressors pls post pics? I'm wanting to see how the styles changed over the years. I'm aware that this fellow is one of the newer ones:
<img src="http://ebay1.ipixmedia.com/abc/M28/_EBAY_c5fe46a75c5a3a3c9ab72559a976786c/i-1.JPG" alt=" - " />
But the one I have is a completely different design - the same as the one shown here on the seat of Todd's 83.

What I'm wondering is if compressors were dealer added (a la floor mats) and if so, if they varied from dealer to dealer or year to year.
Yes, it's ****. Yes, I'm still curious.

I agree that they had to come standard - but I'm wondering if it was dealer-added (and therefore varied) because I've seen so many different ones.

I have seen both. It looks like the first one came in the later cars and the second came in the older cars.
Of course finding a used 944 with factory compressor is really rare find. Most seemingly have "walked off" <img border="0" title="" alt="[Frown]" src="frown.gif" />

My 85.5 came with the earlier style; this is one of the reasons I believe it was dealer added - dealers simply had older style compressors still in stock and added them when the cars were prepped.
BTW, the older style was made in Canada!

My 85.5 came with the later style as in the first picture, and my car was a January 85 production model (very early 85.5). It has the later style dash & the aluminum suspension goodies, but it has a unique DME and a few other odd things like that.
Given that Micah's 85.5 has the early style compressor it would seem that it was likely dealer added & limited to whatever they had in stock. I can't imagine the VW assembly line guys throwing compressors into the trunks, but who knows.....

Here's mine out of an 86 951:

The previous owner didnt even know it existed. It was wedged in the back right wheel well under the trunk carpet. I doubt even the original owner new it was there. The thing is in mint condition as I dont think it had ever seen light before I yanked it outta there.

Apparently, the compressor is optional factory equipment. Reading from the COA for my '84 it lists under optional equipment "Without Compressor and Tire Pressure Gauge".
