Default What 6-speed Transmissions fit in the 944..?

Ive read around quite a bit on this question but no real avail to an exact answer... I know that the 968 6-speed will fit but I "hear" the torque tube and one of the drive axles is different... not really a big deal... But i was reading too that the 6-speed of the 968 is from the decent of the 930 line...

Is this even true..? I have access to a 6-speed 930 unit and was thinking how could something like that even work or if there is some other porsche swap that can be done..?

is there anyone who has simply stripped the gears and casing from the 6-speed unit and just bolted them to the existing 5-speed unit..?

I know they are marked VW/Audi transmission; and knowing VW something like this seems likely to me... Just wondering if anyone out there has tried to do it...

I am not sure where the 6-speed descends from, but there are people here that have bolted it up to their 944's. I don't believe they changed anything. I have been told that the internals can't be swaped because they are too different internally. Also that 6 speed has closer gearing, which results in having to shift very quickly and ultimately having a reduced top speed. If I am gonna get a 6 speed then at the least it should have gearing that spans the same area as the stocker. I really think it should have a higher top speed with pretty much the same gearing. I haven't heard of any such 6-speed, but let us know if you find one.

The 6-speed from the 968s will bolt up to a 944 but you will have to find a way to make your speedometer work. Lindsey Racing sells a kit with trigger wheel and hall sensor. Several people here on the list have done this swap if you search.

I've never seen anyone put a 911/930 transmission in a 944 series car.

a 930 trans would give you 4 reverse gears lol

Yep - the 930 tranny was a 4-speed, since it was more robust than the recently developed 5-speed. (G50, IIRC).

Why do you want a 6-speed tranny in your car? 5th and 6th are both overdrive gears on the 968 6-speed tranny. If you are looking for better gearing for the racetrack, you'd be better off (read: cheaper) getting a set of custom gears that are tuned for a specific track. Heck - I rarely use 5th on the track - only for the long, long straights (VIR, Summit Point, Pocono...etc).

If you want a 6-speed for 'bragging rights' on the street, then just replace the 5-speed plate on top of the **** with a 6-speed one.

you could probably sell the 930 trans and buy the 968 trans, torque tube and halfshaft and still have $$ left over

Yea, but if you flip the ring and pinion around and get the axles to hook up, youd have a bullet proof setup...

Getting to 60mph in 1st would be interesting too.

Yeah, but with a 944S2, it would still take longer to get there than with a real 930.

Thats What I was thinking too..! Also from what I remember messing around with transmission when they are out of the car... If you spin the input shaft in one direction the drive flanges spin in another direction; so if you spin the input clockwise the flanges should turn counter-clockwise and vise versa...

Also I Said 930 because the car it came out of a 1989 911 but whoever owned it converted it to a Turbo Motor w/ a 6 Speed; the reason it was in the junkyard is because someone tried to export the car and the motor & Tranny unit were stolen so they confiscated the car for destruction...

I have just done this conversion on my Turbocharged N/A, I really wanted to keep similar ratios to my N/A transmission but needed a stronger box. I love the six speed, it has short ratios so I get get the revs up quicker therefore get quicker boost, its really great around town and on highways but could be a bit of a pain with a high horsepower motor. As for the speedo drive, I built my own using a fabricated wheel (left drive shaft) and VDO magnetic pickup. Its not difficult to install the 6 speed, you need the shorter LH 968 drive shaft, the shift setup gave me a bit of grief, I installed a short shifter lever but I still need to do some adjustment to reduce left to right motion. I have also noticed that the 6 speed with the short shift lever has a very precise shift, I can't imaging how it would be with a short shift kit for the transmission.

Does this conversion also require the 968 bellhousing?
