Default 88 951 w/LSD 145k miles

OK guys. I found this great looking car for 5900.00 bucks. One owner, the father just recently passed away and the son wants to sell the car. The car looks beautiful and is hard to pass up. He has all the service records from their local Porsche dealer. He showed me a pic of a rust hole on the rear quarter panel *see below*

I would have to buy this car basically sight unseen and have it shipped so I want to buy it via paypal using my MC for the buyer protection.

VIN: WP0AA295XJN151153
option codes: B13, C42, F60, 220 (LSD), 288, 383, 418, 425, 437, 454, 533, 438, 586, 593, 650, 685, 983.

*quoting his email*
The timing toothed belt and balance shaft belts were replaced at 140,300 mi,
front pads and rotors replaced at 135,050 mi. New Toyo T1-R (4) at 130,000
mi. Radiator/hoses, A/C condenser/hoses, exhaust muffler replaced at
101,767. Clutch replaced at 97,684 mi. There's no smoke that I can tell.
I believe that the turbo is original.

Yes, the car has had some minor bodywork done to the front.

unforturnatly the car is located 900 miles away from me in MD. I am seriously considering this car... Here are some pics he sent me. What do you guys think?

Where in MD is the car?
A local Lister might be able to look at it for you.

I would like to see some pictures of the battery area and the spare tire/storage areas. Not to mention the engine compartment. The missing radio and rust lends me to believe this car sat for an extended period. (People don't take the radio out of a car they plan to drive).

in several of the pics it looks like oil or some kind of dark fluid is leaking from somewhere under the car...at least it's all over the ground anyway...? Might want to check that out?

My concern would also be the rust. What other areas have corrosion or rust? You must consider the cost of having the seats recovered and the carpet replaced and fixing the rust.

I would not pay more than $3500. Look at the current market....

just my 2 cents.

yeah, rust spots are like roaches...there's never just one. As mentioned, you're going to have to 1) find the leak(s) and 2) replace a bunch of stuff and 3) be prepared do do some body work or have it done. Looks to me (hard to tell) that it's possibly a little rusty down by the accelerator pedal as well. I know mine doesn't look like that down there...

That is unless you are just looking for something to drive around for a while and don't care what it looks like - but based on your post, that doesn't sound like what you're looking for.

I wouldn't offer more than $4k for it. If you're willing to spend $8-10k you can get a really, really nice car and if you plan on doing upgrades it's cheaper to buy it already in then put it in yourself. I bought mine late last year for $8500 in great mechanical condition (belts/rollers had just been done, new Fiske rims @ $895ea) and only had a power steering leak that cost me a couple hundred to get squared away (those are VERY common, so wasn't a big deal). I've since put a bunch into it in upgrades and fixing the usual suspects (fuel lines, etc...) but you'll have enough problems with the car to contend with to have to deal with mystery rust and what looks like a pretty serious leak somewhere.

I agree with you on the rust and the seat. 3500 though seems low to me. I was thinking 4500-5000

good point. The reason why I am looking at this is because it is an 88' with LSD. looks really straight with the bit of rust. I would guess a grand or so to fix that and with the mileage, another couple of grand in the motor bits and have a decent little 951

I plan on offering 5k too high?

Not to rain on your parade but I sold mine about 3 weeks ago, same mileage, better upgrades, custom interior/sound system and no rust anywhere for that price. I would keep looking; rust has a way of opening Pandoras box on these cars.

That's the problem with corrosion you can't determine how bad it is until you've committed yourself to cutting into it. There's no way to judge what that would cost based on a photo. Thee are bound to be other areas and parts that are just a s corroded. In short $5900 is just way too much for that car, from what I see it's $3.5K - $4K tops and even then I would worry.

A couple of comments, if you don't mind:

1. Black cars always look great in online photos. You need to really look at in person.
2. At that mileage I doubt the LSD is still really working.
3. The seat and interior show a lot of wear and may indicate other things were not well taken care of.
4. Rust is usually non-existant in these cars. If you find it, walk away. There are plenty of non-rusty examples out there.

If it were me, I would hold off for another example.

Good luck with your quest!

T.
