Running light / side indicator problem
Search isn't helping much with this one, and I thought I'd ask for some ideas. I'm putting the lights onto my Turbo body conversion, and have had to rewire the running/turn signal assemblies, since the 3-wire plug was different on the N/A harness of my '88 944S.
I've only done the driver's side front, so far, but here's what I'm getting:
- The turn signal portion (the brighter filament) of the running light works fine
- The running light (the smaller, dimmer filament in the bulb) won't come on, no matter the state of the headlight/parking light switches, or whether or not the car is running.
- There is no light in the side marker at any time. It should be blinking, right? The bulb in there is good.
What I'm really hoping for is a list, ranked from most likely to least, of what I should check.
I've already tried swapping the hot wires to send power through the other pole in the light assembly -- it works fine, so it's neither the bulb nor the light assembly.
My multimeter does not register voltage in the running light wire when the running lights are turned on.

Have you checked your fuses. You have a fuse for the parking lights and one for the turnsignal lights. I don't have the same year as your car, but show fuse #32 as the right front indicator light and fuse #41 as parking light right, both are 7.5Amp. I hope this helps. See my post on 8-19 2009 Wiring Diagram Color Code.

It will solve your proble if the fuse is blown. A blown fuse means no power going to that wire. Simple.
Look under your fuse box cover lid and look down the list. You will notice beside each fuse number what it is used for (Indicator lamp) is the turn signal light. The lights you are installing are they after market lights? If they are Porsche lights the wires should have the same color code on each wire. Example: SW/GN would be a Black wire with a Green Stripe. The first 2 letters are the main wire color and the 2nd 2 letters are the stripe color.

Larry

It seems I should have looked closer at the fuse box -- there is a fuse for pretty well every light, on every corner! I had assumed that the running light and indicator would be on the same fuse.
Spencer, you figured out what was puzzling me -- the side marker isn't supposed to blink! I thought it was wired to the turn signal, not the running light.
Anyway, thank you all for your help! I ended up using a trailer light connection for each running light (with 3 of 4 wires connected) because the pins were too flimsy on the DIN connectors I had around. They're packed with dielectric grease, and should stay pretty weatherproof.

Without a relay, I think it would be tricky, since you would have to tap the turn signal on each corner, and the impedance might get too high...
How do European ones work? Is that side light on the fender a blinker or a steady light?

Hi guys, Go to the link below and search down to Electrical. It will show you how to add another tail light or brake light. I used a double filament bulb and now have 2 tail lights and 2 brake lights on each side. Works great.

Hi Charlie, The lights work great and I think the extra running and brake lights are a big plus. Anything that helps keep someone from running up my rear end is better than it was before.
