An interesting thread here, and for those who object to it, the option exists to simply not read it! Personally, I like the diversity of a few OT posts mixed in with the nutz & boltz (intentional misspelling here, just for kooky effect). This board serves for entertainment as well as information, and I really enjoy the non-Porsche comments and insights of y'all.

Yeah, we have to wade through some poor grammar and spelling, and stuff the spellchecker can't catch (agreed, the "break/brake" thing is pretty annoying), but some people are just in a hurry. That's cool. What bothers me is when someone posts a question and doesn't provide enough info (i.e., year or model of 944) so that follow-up questions are needed by us to answer the original question.

PrerYDoG -- change your name to Monk (as in the new hit series on the USA netweork). That which you wrote was a monkism. Or perhaps what you wrote was monkistic in nature.

And... Hang away!

Prerydog:
Regarding reading literature: I am like you: I find spelling and grammatical errors in just about every book I read! Maybe I have OCD too!

Sidenote: MONK's a great show: it's kinda like the funny episodes of the X-files. Plus I like the main actor: forget his name, but he was that funny Italian guy on Wings (Antonio), and he did appear in an episode of the X-files. Gotta catch the new episode tonight!

BTW: You may want to avoid Mark Twain's works: Tom Sawyer and Huck Fin are written pretty much in a southern slang. Great literary work, but what a pain to read through!

PrerYDoG,

Do authors such as Joyce, Miller, Hemingway or Faulkner bug you? I find that if I read Faulkner and Joyce and the like out loud it is easier to comprehend what they are getting at. Guys like them killed the structure of the English language, but their works are considered some of the greatest written. Figure that out.

I'm telling you, it is linguistic evolution. Our language will continue to become more and more simple and our writing will revert to graphical icons exclusively. I am only half kidding.

Other things that get me are people misusing words and phrases. The president of our company says Eck cetra instead of Et cetera all of the time.

Folks say they were ranting and raving about something that made them mad. They should say they were ranting about it.

Is the saying "to pawn something off" or "to palm something off"? It is actually to palm something off, it is a gambling term.

If you are pissed, are you drunk or angry? Depends on where you live I guess.

To add to a thread that is boring some so much that they can't stop reading it, I have a pet peeve (feed them sesame seeds - they can't get enough)...

There is an British saying that has got mangled recently, it is used in the media frequently and it drives me nuts everytime I hear the 'revised version'.

The original is "All mouth and trousers", as in 'don't worry about him, he's all mouth and trousers' - a loudmouth with no substance.

This has got combined with "All fur coat and no knickers" - to describe a trashy woman.

The result is "All mouth and no trousers" - this is used to replace the first and means nothing - except maybe some people's recipe for a good time.

Manning's irritation at 'pawning someone off' sparked this, blame him if I am boring any of the avid readers further. It might raise a grin from someone and that's more than enough for me.

Holly *******, Batmann

Whut in tarnation is everywun so upset 'bout.
_______________

Look, this is supposed to be fun - right? I'm not having fun when I have to come on here and be made to feel like an idiot. I write the way I think... <see, I paused... <oops, I did it again... and shouldn't have to work my fingers to the bone looking up words like "flamammababble" [Leno with G-Dubya - funny!], or how "irregardless" should or should not be used in a sentance [yeah, spelt it wrong - but did you know what I meant?] <oops, I did it again. I want to converse - not speak *to* you. [I use the "-" to also denote a pause in thinking, or linking of subjects... maybe it should be a comma - don't know, don't lose sleep over it]

It could be worse - I could talk the way I write, also:

"I have to go to the bathroom dot dot dot you're gonna have to take this call dot dot dot if he asks for free shipping dash tell him only if he picks it up period"

I'd rather you be interested in the accuracy of the torque specs I list - if they're wrong, I need to know... and, so do YOU!

I was once in a foundry class with a middle-aged woman who came storming into the foundry, enraged. Her Master's thesis had been returned to her for spelling and grammar corrections... there were several hundred. Her rage stemmed from the idea that she was there to be/become an artist, and being literate had nothing to do with anything important...

I was not sympathetic... I kept thinking, "How can she think she deserves an MFA if she can't write an intelligible sentence with proper spelling?..." After all, if the only thing she wanted was to be an artist, she didn't need an MFA in the first place...

The problem is that people don't read anything anymore. People who read a lot naturally learn to spell and write grammatically. But people no longer read. No literature, no history, no poetry, nothing. 3 books a year is the average in the US. 4-6 hours of television a day is the US average. National drool production is at an all-time high.

I know how the Romans felt as they watched the Goths scale the 7th hill...

Sorry, maybe I wasn't clear earlier - my point was that this is_not the place for grammar and spelling *for_me*. I read, I write, I even dabble in a bit of arithmetic... when I get paid to, I do my best. As always, to each their own - consider this though, a huge percentage of the traffic at this site is due to folks not knowing the answer - so, they ask, you answer. Imagine how fun that would be if we just ridiculed them for not knowing.

Please don't take me too seriously - I don't

I am surprised that anyone would be judged by the way they write, let alone speak? ......

The english written word has evolved to such an extent that I don't believe anyone can safely say that they are writing or speaking proper english.

Unless you are writing one of the dead languages (latin), we do not have any basis to judge anyones written word (Specially in an international forum?? )

The rules are constantly changing and evolving. I admire those who can write and speak so eloquently, but among friends I don't give a rats *** how you speak or write !!!...........

Red face

I hate to misspell, but know that I do sometimes. I also think it detracts from my already limited credibility. It seems to be insidious and some grossly misspelled words have become the norm, nite instead of night, thru instead of through and so on. But the saddest example I've seen so far was at the drive thru (there, see what I mean) window of a local fast food joint. They had gone to an office supply store and had one of those plastic signs made, the type which is laminated in two colored layers, then engraved to expose the letters in contrast to the surface. It said: AFTER 10PM, $50 AND $100 BILLS WILL NOT BE EXCEPTED. So in other words, they'll take 'em. Just exactly the opposite meaning they wanted. What's even more disturbing to me is that, some mangement geek at this establishment wrote this down, and handed it to another geek at the office supply house, who dutifully entered that spelling on his engraving machine and when it was done, handed it to the first geek, who probably commented that it was "very nice!"
